Clivio

Clivio Panorama

Placed on a hill towers the land of Mendrisio and the lombard plane, it was inhabited by the Gauls, the Romans and the Longobards, as well all the Valceresio valley. Native of Clivio was the archbishop Giordano Clivi, who excommunicated the emperor Henry IV as he took off the Pope's hands the pontificial crown.

Unlike the near Viggiù and Saltrio that based their economy on the sandstone quarries, the Clivio people devoted itself to the farming.

To see:

- along the Clivio stream, the two mills, Mulino di Sopra, a spinning-mill in action until 1940, and Mulino di Sotto

- the church of S. Maria della Rosa, with XV century frescoes, used as quarantine station in '600 and now private property.

- the church of S. Materno with XVI century frescoes

- the parish church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, with a baroque Ossuary on the side.
