Lake Comabbio

Lake Comabbio is another natural haven of considerable interest. The plants on its banks include some vary rare species, particularly in the area characterized by floating vegetation. An example is the aquatic plant whose fruits are known as "water chestnuts", still eaten by the local population.

The shallow water and its limited circulation mean that in winter, Lake Comabbio tends to form a layer of ice of considerable thickness. From the earliest times, the lakeside communities were entitled to cut the ice, which was used to cool iceboxes in order to keep fish and other food products fresh.
