Il Melo lies between the two pretty hill towns of Monte San Martino and Penna San Giovanni but it is actually within the comune or township of Monte San Martino.
The town itself is on top of a hill that is more than 600m above sea level (and about 300m above Il Melo) offering stunning views of the rolling Marche hills and the Sibillini mountains beyond.

There are less than 1000 inhabitants but, within the old town, there are two cafes, a restaurant, two churches and an abbey, an art gallery, small park with open air bar / cafe, village store, pharmacy and bank. Here we see the main church in the piazza where regular Sunday masses take place. The piazza also houses the cafe Dei Priori (with its restaurant below), as well as the town hall and war memorial.
