The first track on the album, ‘Keep the Faith’ was “I Believe” which was also the fifth single and released in the UK Where it went to #11. The song was written solely by Jon Bon Jovi and was released on September 20, 1993. The single is not the album track, but the single mix down by Bob Clearmountain thus the name Clearmountain Mix. The B-Side of this UK version of the single is a live version of the song. So, both versions on here are not really album tracks.

The song is about hope. Believing in yourself to fulfill your hopes and dreams. The main protagonist is disillusioned by the world, but yet they still have things they want to do and accomplish. They need to look from within to find the power to still believe in themselves. A pretty great, positive message. Jon really pushes himself on this song and album to be a better songwriter and I think he succeeds.

SIDE 1:

As typical with a Bon Jovi album, the first song is huge with a lead in build up to a massive guitar sound and then the song explodes with a classic Jon Bon Jovi scream. You immediately realize this isn’t the Bon Jovi you remembered. The song will lift you up and inspire. The flashiness is gone, but in its place is a well crafted song and musically it is on another level as there is so much going on you hear something new each time you listen. The solo isn’t flashy, but subtle and fits perfectly in the confines of the song. Jon’s writing has improved and it sounds like he has something to say. A brilliant opening track that sets the tone quickly for the album.

The Clearmountain Mix shaves over a minute from the song which is basically the last bits of the song which was mostly musical outro. The song also feels a little brighter then the original which foe a single probably a good thing. The Clearmountain version is the video version as well I believe (see what I did there).

SIDE 2:

The B-Side is the live version of the song and for that they stuck to the studio version of the song with the outro musical bits. It was recorded at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey in December 1992. The crowd noise is limited to the opening of the song and the end with no crowd noise otherwise. A solid version, but not much life to it as a result of the limited crowd noise. Still, not a version I had so I’ll take it.

And there you have it. One of the many singles I have from the band an done i hadn’t talked about yet so it made the cut for the Collection Series. I like that it is a UK version and not something normally you’ll find here in the States so a cool piece for the collection. Thanks for hanging around.
