Description

Though an ancient variety in Italy, Mutante was only recently brought to the attention of US fig collectors by Nikky. Early results from a first-year tree in 2022 is that it was a dropper, then towards the end of the season started producing edible figs, but not nearly as good as reports from more established trees. 2023 figs have significantly improved, but still not quite up to par with its potential. Mutante is prone to FMV when young, but gradually grows out of it. Various reports indicate that Mutante may take a few years for it develop its quality. This may be a semi-common fig type, but even caprified specimens are known to drop or lack full potential. We are going to give it another year or two to see how it improves. Often has a very tight ostiole. Skin can be tan, to brown, to brick red.
