Valico di Coccau – Thörl-Maglern Border Crossing

This border crossing is where the A23 motorway enters Austria from Italy and becomes the A2. As both countries are part of the Schengen Zone it is possible to pass through this point at speed without stopping. As border enthusiasts however we stopped and looked at the signage, border fences and old border installations. There were no border markers at this point. I visited this point as part of the IBRG SITEX23 expedition that focused primarily on the Italy – Slovenia border and explored a current tripoint ATITSI as well as an yet unexplored historical tripoint ITTSYU – the tripoint between Italy, the Free State of Trieste and Yugoslavia that existed up to 1954. I visited this point as part of the IBRG SITEX-23 expedition.

Prior to the Schengen Zone that abolished border checks, there was substantial border architecture either side of the frontiers. Now they have been removed or are falling into a state of disrepair. We explored what looked like a fright inspection center.
