Description

FAUSTINO BOCCHI (Brescia, 1659-1742) The Dwarves Stripping a Turkey Canvas. Height 86 cm, width 180 cm. (Misses). Provenance: Drake del Castillo family, château de Véretz, by descent. A painting by Faustino Bocchi depicting dwarves skinning a gobbler. Canvas. According to Maria Adelaide Baroncelli, in the 1965 monograph and in "L'arte di figurar pigmei de Mariolina Olivari", the representation of dwarves in Bocchi's and Albrici's work has nothing to do with political caricature. These images are inspired more by comic theatre ("La conessione con il teatro comico è invece indiscutabile", p. 16). Thanks to the jesters, they manage to speak about the absurdity of the world, but remain far from sociological criticism and ideological and philosophical polemics. In all the representations of cut-up birds there is only mention of the "festival of the dwarfs": in the monographs, as well as in the notices of the sales catalogues. The work can be compared to the "Festa in piazza con alberi della cucagna" and the "macellazione dei porcellini d'India" (C19 and A65 in the catalogue of Mariolina Olivari). Moreover, it does not seem to be an ostrich. Firstly because the other representations are similar. Secondly because in Italian, "ostrich" and "Austria" are not as similar as in French. We speak of "ostrica"/"ostrich" and "Austria". Our painting can be compared to the painting of similar subject "Dwarfs emptying a chicken" canvas, 43 x 114cm, kept in a private collection in Brescia, Mariolina Olivari Op.cit. cat A 32, p.65.
