Meaning of "meretrice" in the Italian dictionary

By the term prostitution is indicated the activity of those who offer sexual performance, after payment of a consideration in cash. The activity, provided by people of any sexual orientation, may be self-employed, professional, habitual or occasional. Closely tied to prostitution is its exploitation, or lenocinio, practiced to profit from the activity of the person offering the service by people who generally come as protectors or "lenones". There are also other figures related to the phenomenon of prostitution for which the offense of facilitation can be, instead of actual exploitation. Prostitution in the world is legally regulated in a very varied way: from societies that contemplate full legalization, to others that oppress it through the death penalty. Con il termine prostituzione si indica l'attività di chi offre prestazioni sessuali, dietro pagamento di un corrispettivo in denaro. L'attività, fornita da persone di qualsiasi orientamento sessuale, può avere carattere autonomo, professionale, abituale o saltuario. Strettamente legato alla prostituzione è il suo sfruttamento, o lenocinio, praticato per trarre profitto dall'attività di chi offre il servizio, da parte di persone che generalmente si presentano come protettori, o "lenoni". Inoltre vi sono altre figure legate al fenomeno della prostituzione per cui può configurarsi, al posto dello sfruttamento vero e proprio, il reato di favoreggiamento. La prostituzione nel mondo è regolamentata giuridicamente in modo estremamente variegato: passando da società che contemplano una legalizzazione completa, ad altre che ne reprimono lo svolgimento per mezzo della pena di morte.
