Sassoferrato - Abbey of Santa Croce dei Conti

The Abbey of Santa Croce dei Conti is located near Sassoferrato. Built by the Counts Atti towards the end of the 12th century, it is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the Marche. Like the church of San Vittore alle Chiuse (Genga - An), the church of Santa Maria delle Moie (Maiolati Spontini - An) and the church of San Claudio al Chienti (Corridonia - Mc) - built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, this building has a Greek cross. Incorporated within the abbey, the church has four pillars and two granite and limestone columns made with material taken from the Roman city of Sentinum. There's a number of very interesting capitals of Lombard style, carved in white limestone, showing geometric patterns, plants, with bestiary and imaginary animals; on one of the capitals there's a holy scene, representing the Crucifixion.  A barrel-vaulted narthex leads  to the portal decorated with three concentric arches. The lunette above the portal is finely decorated. Frescoes made by Fabriano  school were added in the late fourteenth century; the church boasts valuable works, including the altarpiece depicting St. Benedict, built in 1524 by Pietro Paolo Agabiti, a splendid 17th century wooden altarpiece, a painting on canvas depicting "St. Romuald and Peter Orsoleo, Doge of Venice, made  probably by Antonio Zanchi, or of his pupil Francesco Trevisani, and San Rocco glazed terracotta dating back to the second half of the 15th century. The most important work - the wonderful altarpiece made by Giovan Antonio da Pesaro - is now in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino.
