La Milza…spleen sandwich of Palermo–

IMG_0031IMG_0032IMG_0033 IMG_0037POW!  Here I am gobbling my first-ever Milza.  La Milza is simply a sandwich made from wonderful Italian bread, cow or pig spleen, lime juice, and black pepper–BOOM!–that’s it.  This sandwich is famous in western Sicily, especially Palermo, as one of the classic, humble street food items that many folks here revere and gobble on a daily basis.  If you are a humble street market worker, then this is a totally worthy thing to be into: it costs two Euros and is packed with protein AND is quite filling.

This dude with the stand above seemed to have the most “real” and “authentic”-looking version of La Milza in the Ballaro Market here in Palermo. . .sooooo I dive right in, order one, and gobble the whole thing within his view. . .he gives me a thumbs-up, and we are now life-long friends and brothers-in-crime. . .saluti!

The sandwich is nowhere near as oppressive or overwhelming as I have been told that it is. . .it’s just a humble sandwich jam-packed with protein–spleen–that most of us never consider or have to consider eating. . .in fact, once I get over the fact that it is quite gelatinous and chewy, I actually start enjoying it. . .and I am full once I have downed the whole thing. . .mmmm, aaaahh!  This will hold me over until lunch with no problem at all.

I send you gamey and adventurous vibes from the Milza guy in Ballaro Market, Palermo. . .feel them. . .they will make you feel more alive than ever.

Markets make us happy–

IMG_0008IMG_0019 IMG_0023IMG_0011BAM!  Here we are in the Ballaro Market in the center of old-town Palermo, Sicily.  Loads of people come here for breakfast every day–above you see me enjoying my breakfast of fried potatoes, fried zucchini, fried eggplant, and calamari. . .all sort of done up in a tempura style but totally Sicilian cuz of the light flour coating before being deep-fried–totally yummy.  My lady loves the long zucchini, as all good ladies should:-). . .plus, we totally enjoy the vibrancy, energy, bustle, and general social-ness of markets all over the world, and the Ballaro here in Palermo satisfies on all of these counts and so many more.

I send you pulsating vibes from Palermo. . .feel them. . .they will get your juices flowin’ each and every mornin’.
