Picchiare can be in the sense of a reproach= hit or beat.
Otherwise, it can refer to the act of producing noise like drumming the finger, in this instance even battere is just fine.
Colpire is strike or hit in general and it involves the act of using an object to hurt somebody, but not necessarily. You could also hit something on your own without looking like a threat.
Battere can be drum, hit, knock, beat. In this respect, for the sake of your comprehension, you will need to give a close look at the phrase or sentence as such.
I'll try to explain myself:
If a furious mother scolds her child the likely sentence will be: "Non picchiarmi!" for the poor little creature.
If you're on a football pitch close to the goal a teammate might say" colpisci la pallaaa!!" and then goooalll, you're the winner!!
Still talking about sport, imagine a tennis court and a Wimbledon match, and the referee says"X beat Y" i.e. X ha battuto Y.
To sum up, there's no colossal difference among the three, what does matter in return is the well-famous CONTEXT. I could be a guideline if you gave me a bit of background stuff to reflect on. For any doubt, don't hesitate.
Cheers
