I heard that Italians don't normally say "buon pomeriggio" for good afternoon (after 12pm) but instead say "Buongiorno" or "Buonasera" Is this correct?

Yes, we rarely say buon pomeriggio because it is a bit formal

Yeah, they're more usual expressions, but "buon pomeriggio" is used tho.
