2 Days in Ometepe, Nicaragua

Ometepe is a beautiful island in Nicaragua!  The island is in the middle of Lake Cocibolca and is made out of two volcanoes – Volcan Concepcion and Volcan Maderas. You are able to hike both volcanoes but since we didn’t have much time here, we only hiked part way up Volcan Maderas. This island is very beautiful and much less touristy than other places in Nicaragua! If you want to see any of the islands, you should consider renting a scooter due to the lack of transportation available. Scooters can be rented from many places in Moyogalpa and there is only one main road so you won’t get lost.  For $25 we rented a scooter for two days right from our hostel.

Where We Stayed

There are a few different towns on the Island. Brett and I decided to stay in Moyogalpa. When we arrived here, we walked down the street to Hostel Papagayo. This hostel was nothing special but only cost $36 for a private room for two nights. The owners were very nice to us! They had the most amazing Nicaraguan breakfast ($1.50 extra per person) and gave us free avocados! They also gave us a lot of advice about where to go and what to see on the island.

San Ramon Waterfall

The San Ramon Waterfall is so amazing and worth the scooter ride and hike to see! This waterfall is part way up Volcan Maderas. It took us just over 1 hour to reach San Ramon on scooter. The road was paved for most of the way but the last 20km was very rocky so we had to drive quite slowly. We had to pay $3 each to enter to park/hotel area. The hike was supposedly 3km but I swear it was at least 5km! The first “2km” were quite simple but uphill. The last “1km” was very rocky and slippery due to the rain so watch your step! It took us about an hour and a half to reach the waterfall and it was so worth it! The waterfall is 60m tall with a pool of water at the bottom of it.   We decided to take of our shoes and go for a swim. The water was very cold but also so refreshing! Along the hike we saw dozens of beautiful blue jays!

The whole trip (the hike and the time spent at the top) took about 3 hours. Make sure to bring extra clothes so you can go for a swim! Bring some food to enjoy at the waterfall and enough water to get you through the hike!

Ojo de Agua Reserve

After hiking to the San Ramon Waterfall, we decided to stop at the Ojo de Agua Reserve to relax! This is a natural spring pool with water from Volcan Maderas. The water is very clean and was amazing to swim in! We also enjoyed the Tarzan swing into the water. It cost us each $3 to get in. There was also a restaurant there and a few people selling homemade items. There is a big sign on the main road telling you where to turn but you can also ask any local and they will point you in the right direction.
