Catanzaro, which is also known as the city of the two seas, is home to 96,000 people. The city is the capital of the Calabria region and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west and Ionian Sea on the east. It shares borders with Reggio Calabria in the south and the Vibo Valentia Province in southwest.
Catanzaro is one of the most developed urban centers, with a frenzy of activities. The area of the center includes some mediocre coastal towns, like Sellia Marina, Soverato, and the Silas municipalities all of which together account for 156,196 inhabitants.
During the summers the inflow of tourists reaches the pinnacle and the Ionian coast starting from Catanzaro till Soverato becomes an important tourist destination. The presence of a number of important structures along the coastal districts and the town of Copanello Soverato becomes an added attraction.
Catanzaro is also called the “city of the three V's”. This refers to the three distinct features, namely the patron saint San Vitaliano, Velvet, which is a significant center for silk since the early ages of the Byzantine Empire, and wind (or vento in Italian). The entire area is extremely windy, thanks to the strong sea breeze that comes from the breezes from the Silas and the Ionian Sea.
The city is famous for a number of places of tourist attraction. One of them is the Catanzaro Bridge, which is an extremely famous one-arch bridge or Viaduct Morandi-Bisantis. It is one of the tallest of its kind in Europe.
The others are the Duomo Cathedral, which was built way back in 1121, the Basilica dell'Immacolata, Santissimo Rosario Church, Sant'Omobono Church, the small Byzantine church, Chiesa dell'Osservanza, or Santa Teresa, ancient ruins of the Norman Castle, Porta di S. Agostino and Porta di Stratò, Palazzo de' Nobili, which is now the Town Hall, Piazza Grimaldi, which is a town square that is named after the House of Grimaldi.
The place is home to some of the best and the most famous hotels and restaurants in Italy, bars and road side eateries. The restaurants come up with the best cuisines, dominated by some exquisite sea foods, and wines that are very much Italian in flavor. There a number of street side shops that come up with a wide variety of local merchandize that main comprises of handicrafts and mementos for the tourists.
The best and the most trouble free way to get to the city and its adjoining areas is by train. The city center has three railway stations, of which, two - Catanzaro and Catanzaro Lido are most famous. There is a metropolitan bus service that is offered by Ferrovie della Calabria. Besides, there are as many as 49 bus service lines that connect the city with other parts of Italy. These buses are operated by AMC or Azienda per la Mobilità Catanzaro.
