About the concert

With “Concerto per Milano” Piazza Duomo once again becomes the stage under the stars for a great celebration of music dedicated to the people of Milan and beyond: since 2013 the Concerto per Milano has been the most popular free symphonic music event in Italy, with over 40,000 live spectators and hundreds of thousands around the world thanks to live TV coverage in previous editions. To celebrate this anniversary, Riccardo Chailly and the Filarmonica della Scala have prepared a programme of great vitality and energy, starting with a foray into the atmospheres of Spanish music, with the “Interlude” and “Dance” from Manuel de Falla‘s opera “La vida breve” and Maurice Ravelfino‘s “Rapsodie espagnole” op. 54 by Maurice Ravel to a tribute to George Gershwin, with the famous and evocative notes of his symphonic poem “An American in Paris” and the “Catfish Row” suite from “Porgy and Bess”. Opening the concert will be the world premiere of “Decisamente allegro”, the new piece commissioned from composer Nicola Campogrande on the occasion of the orchestra’s 40th anniversary.

Ten successful editions

Ten years of Concerto per Milano: in 2013, on the occasion of the Expo Days, anticipating the 2015 universal exhibition, Riccardo Chailly conducted music by Gershwin, with Stefano Bollani at the piano, in front of an audience of almost 50,000 spectators; in 2014 more than 40,000 Milanese remained to listen to Esa-Pekka Salonen with pianist Lang Lang, despite the pouring rain. In the year of Expo, with Chailly on the podium and the performance of David Garrett, the concert in Piazza Duomo has become Milan’s most popular classical event. Recent editions have brought Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Nikolaj Znaider and Russian pianist Denis Matsuev to the stage with Riccardo Chailly. The 2020 edition, exceptionally titled Concert for Italy as a tribute to the country’s efforts to combat Covid-19, featured the great violinist Maxim Vengerov. Despite the limitations, the Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing in Piazza Duomo again in 2020 with Riccardo Chailly.
