Soverato, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Ionian coast in the Gulf of Squillace, is often referred to as “The Pearl of the Ionian.” With its gorgeous white sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, and lively lungomare, it’s no surprise that this beach town has become increasingly popular over the years.
Soverato has a magnificent seafront promenade lined with towering palms and vibrant oleander bushes. Along the lungomare, you can enjoy the upbeat and youthful energy of the numerous beach clubs, pizzerias, trattorias, and ice cream shops. You certainly won’t get bored here, especially during the summer months. Stop and enjoy some live music or art displays along the boardwalk, or have some fun with the kiddies in one of the two small amusement park areas.
Shopping & Markets
The main street, Corso Umberto I, is filled with grand palazzi and has a great shopping district. If you time your trip right, you’ll find the Fiera Espositiva dell’Antiquariato (antique fair). It takes place on the last Sunday of each month. There is also a weekly fruit, vegetable, and clothing market each Friday. And of course, being by the sea, you also have a fish market held each morning at the marina.
Soverato Vecchia
If sitting on the beach all day isn’t your thing, head on over to the ancient hamlet of Soverato. Nestled in the hilly landscape of the town overlooking the sea is the archaeological site of the old village of Soverato. Soverato Vecchia, which was once called “Suberatum”, is believed to date back to the 10th century.
It was founded when the inhabitants moved from the coast and headed into the hills to better protect themselves from enemy raids. Over time, the town fell under the control of different families. It was abandoned after the devastating earthquake of 1783, which destroyed many villages throughout Calabria. The inhabitants rebuilt the town in another area not far away that is now known as Soverato Superiore. Today you can walk the ruins and see the remnants of the two-story Palazzo Baronale, which was once home to the succession of families that conquered and ruled this town throughout its history. The main church perched at one of the high points of the hamlet overlooks the impressive blue coastline in the distance. The village was once surrounded by a protective wall with a watchtower built to protect the townspeople from any potential enemy attacks.
Botanical Garden
Are you a nature lover? Or do you just want to get away from the lively atmosphere of the Soverato Marina? Well, a visit to Giardino Botanico Santicelli is exactly what you need. Take a stroll through this charming botanical garden and admire the plethora of beautiful plants and flowers here, some of which are even considered endangered species. Within the gardens is the legendary Torre di Carlo V built in the 16th century to defend the coast from Turkish invasions. What makes this tower so special is the fact that it’s one of the few square-shaped towers along the coast that is still intact. The garden is a great place to relax and unwind. Don’t forget to take a moment to enjoy the views overlooking the Gulf of Squillace.
