The makers of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game Pier Solar (created in 2008) are currently busy working on their next Genesis title. At the moment its working title is Project Y.
Project Y is still a long way off but it is exciting to know that games are still coming out for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
We don’t yet know what this new post-apocalyptic world will look like but here’s a small glimpse of what’s to come for this beat’em-up, shooter, RPG:
You look’in at me?
The following have less polish but that’s ok. I really do enjoy seeing the evolution of a game. It’s great that the Watermelon Team is willing to share these early stages of their game with us.

More details about Watermelon Team’s Project Y can be found on their site. Be sure to check it out and join their forums. They are great at taking feed-back from fans.
It`s exciting to see that Watermelon Team, the creators of Pier Solar, are not slowing down and still firmly entrenched in making the 16-bit gaming era new again. The Watermelon team is currently working on a Game Guide for Pier Solar and the Great Architects.
There`s currently no ETA but from the small teaser seen below it`s obvious that they`re well on their way.
Pier Solar Game Guide Sneak Peek
In addition to the game guide Watermelon team has been busy working on a new entry for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Currently known only as Project Y this new game will be styled after classic Genesis Beat’em Up games like Streets of Rage with some RPG elements woven in.

There are very few details so far but based on the quality of Pier Solar we have every reason to be excited about this up-coming game. Specially after sampling some of the lore behind this new entry:
“Project Y takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, set in an Asian high-tech metropolis. The last survivors of the nuclear war are divided into several classes, where the most powerful have the others by the balls. This has divided the governing bodies into several fractions, where ethnic mafias and a corrupt corporation are just a few of them! As you can see, this story is filled with many possible scenarios. It will demand lots of exploring and several playthroughs to get everything out of it.”
I’ve never purchased a video game sound track before but I did not hesitate when it came to the Pier Solar Original Sound track (OST).
About a year ago when I discovered that an entirely new game had been created for the Mega Drive/Genesis on December 24, 2008 I was completly shocked and excited. I was too late to buy Pier Solar directly from the WaterMelon Team but I worked hard (a.k.a. threw $100 at the problem) and bought my postarity edition of Pier Solar on ebay.
Had this game came out when the Genesis was current it would have been one of it’s tripple A titles. It’s that good. And when the WaterMelon Team released the less pretty reprint editin I bought the game again. It’s that good 🙂
Even now the Pier Solar hype has not died down for me. So much so that I wanted the OST to compliment my Peir Solor collection.
See how pretty it looks and sounds:

The Pier Solar OST is still available for sale from the WaterMelon Team and for anyone who has only the reprint edition of Pier Solar this OST will have extra value for you. It includes the enhanced sound track which when used in the Sega CD and in conjunction with the cart augments the games sound and music. I’ve read that this feature is a first for a Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge.
Yes, you can download the enhanced sound track and burn it to CD yourself but I’m really enjoying this very nicely polished version.
Here are a few additional details about the Pier Solar OST:
The Definitive Original Soundtrack – everything a fan could dream of! In a stunning packaging with four BUNG-FULL discs, that can be played in any CD player, computer or even your Mega-CD/Sega CD.
Discs 1 & 2 contain the game’s original Mega-CD/Sega CD tracks. Disc 3 contains remixes by famous artists, rare unused tracks & alternates. Disc 4 is our famous Enhanced Soundtrack Disc, the Mega-CD/Sega CD disc to be played with any Pier Solar cartridge!
Also included is the full FM soundtrack in .VGM digital format, for your computer or smartphone.
A little while ago after discovering and purchasing Pier Solar (an excellent RPG for the Genesis) I stumbled into a few related gems.
The first was that Pier Solar has an audio CD and when used in a Sega CD in conjunction with the game cartridge the CD provides the game with background sound that is far superior to the cartridge alone. The Posterity Edition of Pier Solar comes with this CD but the Reprint edition does not. However, since you can download this CD to burn on your own blank disc no one will lose out.
The only downside is was you might not have a pretty display case to hold your CD.
Enter Xam’d! A fellow Genesis fan and huge fan of Pier Solar. Xam’d created some excellent cover art for a variety of CD cases for this Pier Solar audio CD for anyone who has the Reprint Edition. And I am one of these people. Even though I do have the CD included in my Posterity Edition my Reprint Edition felt incomplete and I was very pleased to find Xam’d’s work.
Since I already have a few games in DVD cases in my collection I chose to go with the DVD case layout (vs. the CD jewel Case option). And of the 3 options I picked ‘Cover B’ because it appealed the most to me. Here’s a picture of Xam’d’s awesome work in my collection.
I like and appreciate Xam’d efforts so much that I sent out an email asking if I could host a copy of the covers here on my site. Just today I received a reply and Xam’d is more than happy to spread the love and share his work.
In Xam’d’s email to me the following comment was made:
“PS: Maybe there will be a Wallpaper soon…. 😉 ”
I’m hopeful that we can look forward to more of this excellent work. This is the kind of stuff that I really love from an Internet Community.
I plan on adding a section in my site to include custom work like this and to give credit where it is due. Many of my banners include art work that needs some acknowledgement.
