The municipality has 1.848 inhabitants and an area of 3.599 hectares for a density of population of 51 inhabitants per square kilometre. Products mostly cultivated are lemons, vegetables, chestnuts, hazel-nuts and grapes. Wood handicrafts are very typical. The name of the village derives from Latin Flumen Dionisii, that means river of Dionysus, god of wine in the Greek pagan religion and it refers to the swollen stream present in the place. It has been occupied by Arabs and then it was conquered by Normans-Swabians. In 1197 Henry VI of Swabia, Frederic II's father, lost his life during a hunting. Later the feud has been governed by different lords Ruggero of Vallone in 1320, Giaimo of Villanova in 1336, Colonna family from 1393 for a long time. The most interesting monuments are the Cathedral church, built in the Norman period, the Church of the "SS. Trinit" and ruins of the Belvedere Castle of the XII-XII centuries. It is interesting to know that King Charles III of Bourbon in 1737 made minted coins from metal obtained from mines of Fiumendinisi and made impressed the following inscription Ex visceribus meis, that is "From my viscera", meaning that coins have been minted in Sicily. |
