The municipality has 913 inhabitants and an area of 4.098 hectares for a population density of 22 inhabitants per square kilometre. E-mail address is: roccevald@freemail.it. Main economic activities are agriculture and breeding. Products mostly cultivated are olives, wine-grapes, legumes, hazel-nuts, corn, fruit. Breedings present are cattle, pig and sheep ones. The village derives its name from medieval Latin Roccella "small cliff". The addition is originated from one of three administral districts in which Arabs devided Sicily: it is Vallo di Demena from Latin "Vallum" later changed into Valdemone. There are not many historical information about the village but it rose under Normans and was given in 1296 by Federick II of Aragon to Damiano Spadafora with the title of barony and soon after it became a marquisate. The village has belonged to this family for long time. The most interesting monuments are the ruins of the Medieval Castle, the Cathedral Church with a valuable marble ancon representing the Nativity and the Church of St. Maria dell'Udienza. |
