The Church of Maria Santissima Assunta (Most Holy Mary received into Heaven)

Built in 1532, the Church with Greek-Bizantine rite was restored and enlarged in the second half of the XVIII century when it became like it is now.

The Church, besides being a monument in which are basic elements of oriental theology, also keeps graves of some renowned personalities of Albanian community with first gravestones in Albanian language, objects of great historical and cultural interest.

The inside presents a structure with three naves, finely decorated with elegant wall stuccoes.

Worth of particular attention are ten paintings which adorn various walls, made between 1835 and 1869 by as many artists of Sicilian schools of the time.

Very interesting from an artistical point of view is also the precious Bara Processionale (a sort of wood piece shaped in different way on which Saint's statues usually stand and they are supported on people's shoulders), which contains the Santissimo Crocifisso (Most Holy Crucifix) brought in the village by Albanian refugees before 1482.

It is datable in 1639 and it is in finely inlaid wood and is covered by gold leaves.


La festa di San Giuseppe

In occasion of the festivity of Saint Giuseppe, in the Palazzo Adriano, is tradition thank the saint for the received grace preparing of the tavolate ones, similar to altars, with bread worked in various shapes.

On the table one finds also various pietanze: thistles, broccoli in pastella, finocchi of mountain, etc.

The cakies, that they complete the tavolate ones, is characteristic: the pignolata one, sfingi and the cakes of every type.

The several shapes and several the colors that are assembled has symbolic meaning to religious background.

The main fellow guest is three that represent the Sacred Family: Jesus, Giuseppe and Maria to which the head of household serves the food of the table
