The municipality has 12.058 inhabitants and its area is 18.160 hectares; the density of population is of 66 inhabitants per square kilometre. There are also cattle and sheep breedengs. An important date in the history of this town was 14 May 1860, when Garibaldi proclaimed to take possession of the island in the name of Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia. The center of the town was heavily damaged by the earthquake of the Belice in 1968.

Among its monuments, we can mention the Castle with a trapezoidal shape and with three angular towers: one is cylindrical, the other two are square; the Cathedral, destroyed by the hearthquake, has been built again between 1615 and 1764; the Church of the College, become the Mother Church, rebuilt and enlarged by the Jesuits V. Cascio. The Feast of the loaves are very interesting. They take place on the occasion of St. Biagio and St. Giuseppe's day. In this time the bread takes the oddest and most difficult shapes, and all the inhabitants are involved in preparing it. |
