Why visit Burgio

Burgio it is a small Sicilian village in the province of Agrigento which has just under three thousand inhabitants. Despite its small size it is one of the most iconic places in Sicily, managing to tell a story through its artwork, his story and his traditions with the various artistic currents that have crossed this corner of Sicily contributing to its uniqueness.

The country is also well known for its Bells from the Virgadamo foundry, which has been forging bronze bells for 500 years with an ancient technique that has now been handed down for several generations.

What to do in Burgio

Burgio has a lot to offer tourists who visit it. An evocative place that is certainly worth visiting is the Museum of Mummies, located in a Capuchin convent. Recently, after a long period of abandonment, the church, the convent and the crypt which houses the Mummies Museum have been restored and brought to their former glory.

Another of the attractions not to be missed is the Mother Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, built in Renaissance style, except for the bell tower which dates back to the sixteenth century. Certainly, one of the most appreciated and loved places of worship by tourists and above all by the citizens of Burgio.

Al Patron saint of Burgio instead, it is dedicated every year Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, with the traditional procession of the Saint through the streets of the town.

Another event not to be missed is that of Holy Week, one of the main cult events, deeply felt by all citizens. It includes the blessing of the palms, the procession with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Good Friday processions plus the meeting between the Virgin Mary and the Risen Christ on Easter Sunday. This last event is known by the dialect term Ncontru.

How to get around Burgio

Burgio it is a small village, as such we don't find many means of public transport, although there is some bus numbers. In any case, it is very easy to move around the municipality on foot, in our opinion, the ideal is to move with the right middle of transport (car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.).

Our advice is to visit it on foot, to discover the streets of the village, but also the squares and churches. By doing so you also get the chance to taste and savor all the typical dishes of the village directly from the producers in the area and in the inns located in the centre.
