Due to its chronological proximity to the publication of the Justinianic archetype, the “Littera Florentina” represents the single most relevant manuscript for the transmission of the Digest. A hitherto unnoticed material aspect of it are several spatia interrupting the scriptio continua – in some cases combined with dots and double dots, which are mainly concentrated in the sections assigned to one of the scribes working on the manuscript. This paper aims to briefly present a new project focused on these material clues, based on the observation that the manuscript contains several relics of the editorial process. The main question is whether the scribes reproduced consciously signs or signals, which were not actually intended to be copied but rather reflected the transmission process behind the Florentina. The main goal is the reconstruction of the model manuscript, thus the attempt at understanding how empty spaces and signals practically originated. A further issue is whether these material elements could explain problematic sections of the excerpta, instead of representing generic semantic breaks, and if they correspond in several cases not only for a matter of chance to attested omissions of text through parallel sources to the original work of the ancient jurists.

We will look at different kinds of sources (papyrological, literary and juridical texts) involving the word paragauda, ae / paragaudes,is, which mostly refers to "something lazed on garment"/"clothing decorated with strips". The main goal is to build up a connection between the sources, to especially analyse the case of "gold strips" on tunics and their context and to point out a possible re-interpretation of relevant passages. Finally, I will show a few material pieces of evidence that shall be evaluated in light of the written sources.

This paper is aimed at pointing out the use of the term paragaudes or paragaudion (both greek and latin) in the Roman world, and analysing the social context in the papyrological sources, along with the prohibition of wearing decorative strips in specific materials addressed in the late antique juridical texts: in particular, I discuss on one side the shape of the decorative strips and the materials applied to different contexts based on the literary sources (purple for the patrician class, gold and silk for the imperial court and the 'vassals'), on the other side the right-angle shape as earlier depiction of the shape associated to the term in later sources, especially the military channel and the evidence of the gamma with notched ends on fabrics and portraits from Nubia, Judea, Syria, Egypt, with some assumptions on the transmission to the imperial clothing and the religious vestments in late antiquity

The Department of Classics at Würzburg University invites students of all levels, academics and professionals in Classics, Ancient History and Ancient Philosophy to participate in the ENCODE winter school "Papyrology for non-specialists". The goal of the school is twofold: It is aimed both at non-specialists who seek a first introduction into papyrology and at papyrologists who are teaching papyrology to students of other subjects. We intend to present and to put into practice a range of methods to make Greek and Latin papyri accessible to the non-specialist, with a focus on digital tools and resources. In this way, we hope to provide beginners with an introduction and a possibility to meet papyrologists, and fellow papyrologists with new ideas and digital methods of teaching.

XXIV 2410.
