On The Cover of Blu-ray Disc
I took a photo on August 20, 2020 of cover of Blu-ray Disc. Notice on the top where it says “Version Francaise Incluse” I was alarmed because the one displayed on Amazon didn’t have this statement on there. I played the Blu-ray Disc and it was in English. What a relief! The description on Amazon says “Dubbed in French, German” that alarmed me too but the movie is speaking English. I’m happy that this transaction went well. Hellboy with the original actor Ron Perlman is the best actor for playing Hellboy. I thought the movie was great and kept me going through the whole film.

FORMAT: Blu-Ray
UPC: 0-43396-19172-3
RELEASED: 2007-06-05

TITLE: Hellboy: Director's Cut (2004) • Unrated • 2:12:29
Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair, Doug Jones
Guillermo del Toro (Director)

Director Guillermo del Toro strikes again! This is a movie based on a comic book character (though, admittedly, a most unusual comic book character) that doesn't SEEM like a movie based on a comic book character — mainly because, while it has plenty of action, it also has plenty of character development and numerous instances of witty and interesting dialog. See the other reviews for more detail and/or other opinions regarding the plot of the movie.

VIDEO: 1.85:1 • Color • 1080p • MPEG-4 AVC (25.9 Mbps)

The images presented in this movie are fairly sharp, with very good delineation of objects in the deep shadows (of which, there are many). Also, the image possesses a muted color-palette that works very well with the tone of the source material. However, the entire film appeared ever-so-slightly soft, and lacking in fine detail — as was evident in many of the close-ups of faces, clothing and the many occult artifacts (it was as though someone was a little too vigorous in the use of the "sharpness" control when transferring the film). Aside from some infrequent occurrences of banding (particularly around the dropped light-sticks when Abe was swimming in the underwater cavern), there were no other major picture anomalies (such as: specks, hair-lines, white dots, color fluctuations, etc.) to mar the image. Overall, this movie's picture quality, while very good, is another example of the learning curve that was encountered by those who transferred movies to blu-ray in the early days of the format: that is, usually more than adequate, but could be better (nothing that a remastering using current techniques and technology couldn't fix).

AUDIO: LPCM 5.1 (48KHz, 16-bit) • Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbps)

I listened to the LPCM track all the way through, and compared several short sections of the standard Dolby Digital track to the LPCM track. The midrange and high-end sections of the LPCM track (particularly with voices and music) were more life-like and had greater detail than the lossly Dolby Digital track. However, the Dolby Digital track seemed to have more prominent, and slightly deeper, bass than the LPCM track — though, neither featured very deep bass. The surround channels were fairly active and somewhat directional, dialog was cleanly recorded and well-placed, and ambient sounds that convey the location of the on-screen setting were effectively integrated into the soundtrack. The LPCM version is a very good (though not great) soundtrack, which should satisfy all but the pickiest listeners.

First of all, I love the Guillermo del Toro Hellboy movies. I was just looking to get the original 2007 Director's Cut Blu-Ray because it's simple, cheap and to the point. The movie is even better than I remember it from when I was a kid and all the more visually stunning with all the practical effects that are in full use with the aid of CGI only when necessary to accent the scope of the vision Guillermo had for this film. The same goes for the sequel, which I already had as well. A masterpiece in it's own right, especially for a comic book adaptation. Right up there in the top 5 comic book film adaptations. Ron Perlman is Hellboy and no reboots could ever measure up to Guillermo's creative prowess in bringing such a world to life. I recommend this movie to anyone who truly enjoys cinema.

As for the service from Amazon, I'm shocked I received an out-of-print 2007 Blu-Ray as if it was just printed and plastic wrapped yesterday. Brand new, no dents in the case and in clean pristine condition. That goes for the plastic seal the case was wrapped in as well. Probably the best experience I've had with buying a Blu-Ray on Amazon, considering I've often gotten beaten up and cracked cases in the past... which I hate because I'm particular about the condition of my personal game and movie collection. Thanks Amazon.

In HELLBOY, author/illustrator Mike Mignola has conceived one of the meanest stories around. Quirky in its blend of macabre wit, searing suspense, and supernatural thrills, the ongoing Dark Horse fright fest is among the most stylish, hard-hitting, genuinely mind-blowing Sequential series ever rendered. Yet it's the author's fine line for depth and subtlety which accents HELLBOY's outrageous escapades with an intricate simplicity, marking the saga as the comic book equivalent of a musical tone poem.

Well, this past spring, Mignola hooked up with director Guillermo Del Toro and legendary character actor Ron
Perlman to bring Mignola's chilling saga to the big screen. If you missed your first chance to catch this rollicking potboiler, run, do not walk, and buy the Columbia 2-DVD set, nicely packaging the film along with deleted scenes, film & TV ads, a detailed documentary and more.
Del Toro, cast, and crew delivers a colorful roller-coaster ride which harkens back to the nail-biting pulp stories of the 1920s, and the cliffhanger matinee serials of the 1930s and 1940s. Its cunning terror opts for the majestically grotesque a la H. P. Lovecraft, amid topical monstrosities worthy of Clive Barker. HELLBOY is refreshingly free of the thudding goguery passing for "Modern Horror" a la ELM STREET's Freddie Krueger, among other cliches.

Perlman's take on Mignola's hard-bitten, acid-tongued, gold-hearted adventurer is a classic all in itself. The inner conflict between Heaven and Hell, grace and damnation, is outlined in every move he makes, and felt in the shading his voice can impart through even the lightest of lines. Catch HELLBOY's struggle in his very eyes, and begin to know what an exceptional job Perlman does here.
Speaking of knockout acting performances, don't miss Selma Blair's smouldering cool as the diffident firebrand Liz Sherman, or Karel Roden's utterly creepy brilliance as the malevolent Rasputin.

From Marco Beltrami's penetrating score to Guillermo Navarro's
unforgettable cinematography, HELLBOY is an enigmatic feast for
the eye and ear and mind. Tweaking the tale just so, while keeping
amazingly true to the heart of Mignola's text,
Del Toro's result is a maddeningly delightful,
gleefully mature film. Check it out!

Oh... and don't forget your cross.
