The graphics aren't bad at all for a PS2 game, even if there aren't many character appearance options (in many cases you'll bowl against a twin, lol). The alleys are nicely fleshed out, and it amazed me that there is actually other bowling action going on away from your lane, creating a nice immersive audio/visual experience. It definitely sounds like bowling when you play, which only adds to the experience. The bowling animations themselves are smooth and realistic, but other animations (players celebrating a good throw or berating themselves for a bad one) don't look as natural as they could.
Going through options can be slow (selecting a character for quick play, going through options when creating/customizing a career player, etc.). Only a few basic options settings (music and sfx levels, vibration, whether the cute (but repetitive) animations are on or off) are available. Otherwise load times are very quick to non-existent going into the different modes. One thing I find missing during any game mode is the ability to actually pull up your full score, instead you are stuck with a few frame summary before/after every bowler takes their turn.
As far as game modes, the quick play is just that. Select your character(s) (it says in the manuals you can select your career bowler but mine aren't showing up yet, but I haven't made enough money to buy them their own ball so perhaps after that; also, if you want to go up against any CPU players that process is cumbersome and not very easy to pick the one you want); choose whether you want a standard game or if you want to pick your pins to practice certain shots; pick your location (three unlocked to start with, you have to progress in the career mode to unlock others). Then off you bowl. The career mode can be quite challenging as your player starts off with limited ability and has to play through league nights, tourneys, and the occasional challenge. You don't get to pick which attributes (power, accuracy, hook and stamina) to upgrade, it just happens on its own, and I find that slightly disappointing. I'd rather apply more hook control than power.
The physics of the game seem quite accurate, even if accuracy doesn't really seem to matter unless you completely whiff on a throw. The starting oil conditions and how it changes based on how the lane is used is probably the greatest challenge, especially for League Night games where the oil pattern really changes over three games. Expect, even if you find a groove to get strikes, for the conditions to throw it off and you have to figure it out all over again, just like real bowling. One thing that would be nice in real bowling that is available in the game is seeing the oil pattern (hold R2 button) so you can see where the oil has been picked up and put down.
The items (clothing, balls, accessories) are pretty basic even if there are dozens. That's honestly the best way to customize your characters, because again the different character styles are very similar and few. Don't expect to pick up your own ball right away in Career mode, the cheapest is over $1000 and you don't get paid for League Nights, only a $100 weekly allowance ($15 of which, during LN weeks, goes to your lane/rental fees).
Overal it's a good bowling game. I think there could've been more customization options available, both in player creation and player customization. But it delivers in game play.
Nothing too fancy, but still fairly fun to play.
