Product description

As a fearless cab driver with attitude, your goal is to rack up the mega-bucks before your shift ends. It's a race against the clock as you pick up passengers and white-knuckle it through busy streets and back alleys to their various destinations. To keep that meter collecting cash, you've gotta take the fastest route possible, even if it means bending the traffic laws--just a little. So get a grip on the wheel, sharpen your senses, and don't lose your cool.

If you think it's hard to flag down a cab in a big city, try driving one in Sega's zany straight-from-the-arcade port of Crazy Taxi. If you're one of the teeming fans who eagerly played Crazy Taxi in the arcade at a buck a pop, then this game is a must-buy, if only from a purely economic standpoint. Even those who don't know the difference between Crazy Taxi and the long-running TV series Taxi will immediately recognize the appeal of this game. In fact, this game is so impressive and addictive that it should easily convince a whole new wave of buyers to purchase a Sega Dreamcast.

What's so hot about Crazy Taxi? For starters, the graphics sport the most impressive re-creation of a living city ever seen in a video game. The level of detail is astounding and never ceases to surprise the player as block after unique block speeds by. The city is a distilled version of San Francisco with some landmarks and neighborhoods left intact. Making it seem all the more real are apparent product placements of real-world retail locations such as KFC, Tower Records, and Pizza Hut. And just about everything you see on the screen is interactive: boxes, phone booths, and mailboxes topple when bumped or smashed, pedestrians leap and tumble out of your path, and the myriad of traffic attempts to avoid your erratic high-speed antics. While some driving games brag about a lack of boundaries, this one delivers--players drive on the ocean floor, off the second floor of a parking garage, through parks, and down stairs. A helpful hovering arrow points drivers in the correct direction, but you can truly drive wherever you want at any time, making for tons of replay value.

While the game is a direct port from the arcade game of the same name, there's plenty more depth in the home version. In addition to the city that appears in the coin-op version, the Dreamcast version also includes an entirely new city. Crazy Taxi includes a trunk-load of mini-games that help to teach drivers how to perform the special speed boosts and maneuvers in the game.

Though this game would be plenty exciting without any sounds at all, it has an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack supplied by punk crossover bands the Offspring and Bad Religion, as well as some good, if sometimes monotonous, dialogue between the driver and the passengers. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Wonderful, realistic graphics
  • Easy to get into, and full of many long hours of addictive play
  • Even more to offer than the fantastic arcade game upon which this is based
Cons:
  • On very few occasions players will encounter some graphic slowdown

Long before the rise and downfall of the Sega Dreamcast, Crazy Taxi was a game found in the average arcade of the 90s. The spot on, perfect port of Crazy Taxi from the arcade game to the Sega Dreamcast console is what made Crazy Taxi a must have for all Dreamcast owners and among the top sold video games of its time.

The object of the game is to operate a taxi cab and earn as much money in fares as possible within a set time limit. You select from 1 of 4 characters and then proceed to one of two cities, based on whether you select to play the arcade mode or an alternate mode designed for the home console (the major difference between the modes is the city you are driving through). You then drive as fast and as sporadic as possible to pick up and drop off customers. You are awarded with a higher fare based on how fast you get the customer to the destination. The object of Crazy Taxi is to not be a perfect driver, in fact the craziness of your driving is often awarded with additional cash. At the end of each game you are given a grade based on how much money you managed to earn.

A few interesting things about Crazy Taxi are its use of real-world advertisements in the game, which in the late 90s was a first for video games. Your customer often times will request to be driven to KFC, Pizza Hut, The Fila Shoe store, or The Levi store. The soundtrack of the game is filled with music from bands The Offspring and Bad Religion, fitting the game and its release date well.

The only minor downfalls of this title are that it can seem repetitive after a while, but you must keep in mind that this is because Crazy Taxi is an arcade game, and its lack of simultaneous multiplayer.

Though ports of Crazy Taxi eventually came out for PS2 and Gamecube, the Dreamcast port is the only one that is a perfect replication of the arcade game. It is also the best selling version of the game.

Crazy Taxi's addictive game play, excellent graphics (especially for the time), great soundtrack, and arcade fun are what make this game such an excellent title. Most Dreamcast owners will rave about this game because of how it showcases the Dreamcast's abilities, it even has functions available with the use of the
Visual Memory Unit - Blue . Crazy Taxi is a game that all Dreamcast owners need to own and enjoy, if you are skeptical, please take my word for it.

Arrived a little early, but it works. One of the best racing games on the Dreamcast. It has fun and simple gameplay of picking up people getting them from point A to point B within a time limit. It has tons of minigames, and It has a rocking awsome licensed soundtrack featuring The Offspring and Bad Religion. It is a classic and is easily a must have for your Dreamcast collection.

Love this game and the dream cast is still my favorite game console

Sega's famed Dreamcast console was definitely known for its wide variety of game styles. 2-D Fighters, Survival Horror, Platformer, Racer, Arcade, etc. Crazy Taxi is one of the best under the Arcade category.
However, if you are looking for a game you can play hours on end, I wouldn't recommend this one. I got bored of it in around 10-12 minutes, But rather you are a casual gamer of not, this is a nice addition to your Dreamcast library, as it is one of the classics, and if you are very short on time, you can mess around inside of the game's two well-designed worlds.
This game also has quite a humorous side. Hearing the driver and the passenger shouting back and forth betwixt each other while your driving is an experience that's very laughable.
Another notable side to this game is the music. The songs are great, The Offspring rarely fails to impress me. However, there are only 4 songs in the game. After playing the game 20 or 30 minutes, you'll have the songs memorized, and then the game starts to feel a bit more repetitive.
I myself think this game is worth buying for 15 dollars or less. If you can't find it that cheap on Dreamcast, it was ported to GameCube and PS2, and later to Xbox Live Arcade * I don't know if PSN has it*. Still, keep in mind, this game is not worth dishing out the huge dollars for, just a little cash for a quick fun ride. Just like an Arcade game.

This is a great fun game !!! I love the repetition and driving nuts at the same time , trying to get your customer to their location on time is cool.

My disk is a little scratched but works fine. I've already made a backup and am using it instead of the original disk.

The only reason this is getting four stars is the fact that mine was shipped in only a bubble wrap envelope, so when it arrived a corner of the jewel case has chipped off. Everything else with the purchase was great, with extremely fast shipping.
