1. Graphics. The level of detail on individual objects, combined with the draw distance and just sheer awesomeness that is frequently on the screen at any given time blows anything up to this point on 360 out of the water. All that in a frequently vibrant world of near future, devestated Manhattan. Take that both Gears of War and Halo. Also, the environment reacts. Wood barriers splinter when hit with gunfire for example.
2. Sound/score. It has been previously mentioned but it bears repeating. The score is fantastic. Sometimes it feels like Predator (I wish I could remember everything that comes to mind), but throughout the score is the equal to any great action movie you have ever seen and is always appropriate to what environment you are in/what is happening on screen. As far as the sound effects, this is one I can't comment on because I have them cranked way down due to having an infant son.
I do also enjoy the voice acting, it's not the best ever but it's good, with lots of ambient dialogue from other characters in the story.
3. Story. Speaking of story. I had heard that Richard Morgan, author of Altered Carbon, penned the story which didn't get me too excited, but I have generally enjoyed the story so far. You are a silent protagonist, much like the original Halo, but in the context of the game it makes since. You are a grunt who is in way over his head from the beginning. The dialogue is pretty well written and the twists and turns make sense and are interesting. It's a bit like Halo: Reach where you go here to do that, but what you just did doesn't matter and you still then go on to the next thing to get that, and so on, but as far as fps games go it is paced well and sets up the action well.
4. Gameplay. Again, Crysis 2 shines in this department. I feel like I am still learning how to effectively use the suit in the game, despite being pretty far into it, but it is absolute blast, no exaggeration, when you pull off cool moves/kills that would be just about impossible in any other fps. It also simultaneously lets you feel like a bad mofo without diminishing the challenge from the enemies you face.
I have seen the AI being praised and being trashed by critics, and I get that aspect. They flank well and are aggressive in a way that adds to the challenge but, inexplicably, I will occasionally casually walk up behind enemies walking into walls who are aware of my presence but not taking cover, attacking, etc, and dispatch them point blank. That's maybe one enemy out of ten encounters, but it happens frequently enough to notice. Overall, the AI is much better than what are often referred to as corridor shooters like Call of Duty, where guys either stay in the same exact spot or run heeadlong at you, but not as good as Halo, which has the best AI in the business.
Also, level design is amazing and contributes to that feeling that you are the Predator, and can make the enemies your *******, cloaking or using the cover and going Rambo style.
5. Final word. Without reinvinting the fps genre, Crysis 2 is a significant step forward. It looks amazing and sounds amazing. More important, it plays amazing and is an especially fresh take for console gamers. I feel like I'm just scratching the surface and I've played both singleplayer and multiplayer for hours. It does have the occasional rough edge, but imo that's from craming such an amazing experience onto consoles that are no longer state-of-the-art. All in all, BUY THIS GAME, especially if you are into scifi and fps games. For me this is a 9.5/10 game.
The levels are huge, similar to Halo Reach's size, but this is not an open world game, and levels are linear. The developers left enough wiggle room so that you can choose how you want to proceed in each level, adding a lot of replay value. It's fun to play levels over again with different tactics and see how things play out. The AI is pretty smart, however there are some moments when enemies will walk into obstacles and get stuck instead of just walking around the obstacle. There also isn't a lot of variety of enemies. Mainly you'll fight "bad" humans who are all exactly the same, plus 3 types of aliens who are all almost exactly the same. A few battles against and/or in vehicles change things up from time to time, but mainly you fight on foot. By the game's end, it all starts to feel a little repetitive, but the game ends before it wears out it's welcome.
The sound design is well done, and weapons, vehicles, and aliens all sound appropriately lethal, with your Nanosuit's AI voice being a highlight of the game. The music is good, although it doesn't change based on your situation, but rather triggered by checkpoints in the levels. This leads to some moments where dramatic music plays while you're doing almost nothing. Voice acting is done well, and none of the characters come off as corny, although a lot of the curse words feel forced, both in the situation and by the actor.
As good as the graphic, gameplay, and sound are, the story is not. It's unfortunate that a game with this level of polish falls so flat in the story department. The setup for the plot is told in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the rest of the game is just other characters telling you to go here and there, and the story never goes anywhere. Questions like "Why are the bad guys trying to kill you" and "Why are these aliens invading" are answered with a lazy "because". For all your efforts over the course of a 15 hour campaign, hardly anything is accomplished aside from a pile of corpses in your wake.
The multiplayer is solid, featuring a level up system similar to CoD. The Nanosuit abilities change the pace of the matches, however, and that is where Crysis 2 sets itself apart. As for performance, the game runs smoothly without lag, and the graphics are just as amazing in multiplayer as offline single player. It should be noted, there is no spit screen mode of any kind, and the online multiplayer is competitive only, so no co-op missions or anything like that. On the plus side, this game does support 3D for those with 3D HDTVs.
Overall, the gameplay is solid enough to keep this game entertaining despite the writer's lack of imagination. The suit abilities put an interesting twist on a tried and true genre that's starting to homogenize, and if you're a sucker for graphics, you're not going to find a better looking game on consoles. Most importantly, this is a very fun game.
