The Reemergence of the Darkness

In The Darkness II players are taken down the brutal and personal path of Jackie Estacado, head of a New York crime family and wielder of an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction known as the Darkness. The Darkness II stands out visually with its distinctive graphic noir style, and it is the only first person shooter to feature quad-wielding: the ability to simultaneously utilize four different weapons (2 weapons and Jackie's Demon Arms).

Exact vengeance like no Mafia don before as you explore the true nature of the Darkness.

It's been two years since Jackie Estacado used the Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend's murder. He's been unable to shake the memory of Jenny's death since bottling up his supernatural power and now the Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie's life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war and opens the door for the Darkness to reemerge. The botched attempt sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of the Darkness itself.

'Vendettas' Co-op Functionality

Vendettas, a co-op multiplayer mode for The Darkness II that can be played with up to four people. The story of Vendettas runs parallel to the events of the game's single-player campaign, and features a cast of characters with unique abilities and histories tied to the Darkness.

Key Game Features

  • Quad-wielding Chaos - Slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with the Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons, adding a new dimension to the FPS category

If you liked the original "The Darkness" game, than you will enjoy playing the sequel. It brings back everything about the first and improves on it. Quad-wielding is very effective and is easy to use. You'll be tearing people apart, ripping out their spines, shooting'em up, and eating out their hearts in no time.

My only problem with the game was that it was way too short. They have side missions that you can do with other characters who also have darkness powers, and these extend the gameplay, but not significantly and are very loosely tied to the main plot. Game-play time is also extended by the "New Campaign+", but it's just a replay of the same campaign, but you'll still be building your skill tree and learning new darkness powers. If you buy the game for under $20 dollars, the amount of play that you get from the game is well worth it

I didn't like was that the sequel has a more restrive, less free-world atmosphere. Also there were huge differences with your darklings. First of all you only get one, and it has zero customization. There is a short level where you can control your darkling, but besides that the only thing your darkling does non-storyline related is randomly hold down an enemy and your can throw him at an enemy and he will claw him to death. Also I thought that the alternative shooting realm section (similar to when you went to WWII in the original) was way too short and less emersive and more linear.

I really hope the make a third Darkness games, as I am a huge fan of the series. If they do make a third I would like to see more story-based gameplay, more darkling functionality (maybe something like how you use your minions in the "Overlord" game), a more emersive alternitive realm section, and a more open-world design. These feature that were lacking in "The Darkness II" combined with the great gameplay and wonderful story-telling that was present in the sequel will make for one fun gaming experiance.

Bottomline is that this game would be great for those who enjoy shooters, but would like to experiance something that doesn't follow your traditional run and gun gameplay. It would also be a good game for people who liked the first Darkness game andor enjoy a great storyline. Basically this game is for a gamer who wants a quick, fun, unique, and entertaining and is looking for a discounted and cheap experiance. For $20 or less, this game is worth every penny.

Darkness II is easily one of the best comic book based video games to appear on modern gen consoles. Taking the route of comic book style graphics that can be seen in such hits as Borderlands and Crackdown series, Darkness produces a very satisfactory action shooter game which can easily be enjoyed by any fan of the series or those looking for an engaging story line. Excellent voice acting and gradual exposition of the characters, whether main characters friends, or villains, presents a very interesting and easy to follow story. Blood and gore are pretty intense here but they are not what makes Darkness II stand out. I think the best part is constant narration from the characters of the story that keep reminding the player why are playing.

Pros:
-improved soundtrack and audio
-great voice acting across the game
-a solid plot that presents a believable world where actions and motivations behind them make sense.
-a very diverse upgrade tree
-many attacks and methods to fight through the game
-very interesting additional characters with supernatural abilities
-multiplayer and single player survival mode
-game mode +

Cons:
-narrow angle of view of the camera
-not much interaction with environment
-predictable story
-not much new to see for fps fans
-not for family viewing due to gory scenes and sexuality

So this is pretty much a must play for mature gamers, especially for horror genre fans. Good replay value.

So to begin this review, I never played the first game, so I thought that I would be lost in the story. However, The Darkness II has a "previous" feature when you first start your first game, asking if you'd like to know what happened in The Darkness I previously before the events in The Darkness II. I like when they emblem this sort of feature in video games.

I must say that I heard so man goody things about The Darkness I that when I heard about The Darkness II, I was really interested with the game. To say the least, The Darkness II went above and beyond my expectations.

The game-play and game-play's physics are great. Controls are very easy to use and doesn't lack or hang at certain points. I really enjoyed how The Darkness II had more of a comic book design, which was really well preformed.
The story is very interesting and got me sucked into the game for hours. I nearly completed the game in one sitting, because of the story being so interesting that I didn't feel the need to pull away from the video game just yet.

I believe this game to be for all gamers that enjoy first person shooters, exactly like those F.E.A.R video games. If you played and enjoyed The Darkness I, I'm pretty sure you will not have any problem playing The Darkness II.

I must say that I would recommend The Darkness II for those who enjoy the dark side of a story with a interesting background history regarding the main character in the video game.

I gave The Darkness II a 4 out of 5 rating, but I'd really feel the need to go for a 5 out of 5 rating. However, I felt as if the game wasn't completely top of the range. It's a great game and excellent story behind The Darkness II, but I'd agree with anyone that say this game may come out as a little short. I already spent a little over seven hours into the main story, so it really isn't THAT short for the type of video game that it is, so I believe that it was money well spent.

The Darkness II also comes with a co-op mode, which gives the video game more play re-playability.

The Darkness II is incredible and it's worth owning, however for those sketchy, I'd suggest renting it, as I'm sure you can finished the entire single player mode in one sitting, but may want to own if you think you will play it again. The Darkness II has a New Game+ mode, so I will be sure to replay the game just so I can play as a fully maxed out character with all of the special abilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars なかなか楽しいけど・・
Reviewed in Japan on February 25, 2012
Platform For Display: Xbox 360Verified Purchase
