View larger. Intuitive and Kid-Friendly Technology
Made of rugged plastic that will survive all kinds of crazy play, the iXL is similar to popular hand-held game players, but is designed for the use of younger children. The device opens like a book to reveal an LCD touch screen that displays all the action. Your kid will navigate through the activities by touching the tethered stylus to the screen.

The iXL is extremely intuitive and uncomplicated. The stylus has a holster and is tethered to the device by a sturdy nylon string, so your child will never lose it. Opposite the screen is a speaker with volume control, an Action button that allows you to make choices in certain modes, and a Home button that returns you to the Main Menu whenever you wish.

Easy Set Up
To turn the piece on, you or your child will simply press the Power button positioned on the side of the device. All elements of interaction--from the generous buttons and stylus, to the iXL's hearty casing--are practical for children's use.

After unpacking the iXL, you'll get it ready for play by inserting four AA batteries then completing a quick calibration of the touch screen. You'll want to install the software for this toy via the accompanying CD-ROM to access additional features, software updates, and customizations. Additional iXL features include an SD slot for memory expansion, built-in memory of up to 150 MB, and a standard headphone jack for those long car rides or flights.

An Interactive Learning Experience
The iXL will keep curious kids busy, entertained, and learning with its six preloaded activities. Your child will practice reading and comprehension with the Digital Reader, which includes an interactive 15-page story available in either the reading or interacting mode. For kids who love action, the Game Player features a three-level arcade game that promotes counting and learning about sequences and numbers.

Future young writers can practice the alphabet and their penmanship in the Notepad mode, while young artists will flex their creativity with the Art Studio's digital tools. The iXL includes an MP3 Player with five preloaded kid's songs and a Photo Viewer with three sample images that can be embellished and manipulated.

Software Downloads Expand Features
You'll get the most from the iXL by loading the software onto your PC and attaching the device to your computer with the accompanying USB cable. Although with high-speed cable internet software may take up to 30 minutes to download, once you completed this you can transfer files to increase playing options, including additional software for purchase that will add new stories and games for your child to play.

Navigating the software is simple and intuitive. You can create up to five profiles for the iXL, so this device can be enjoyed by the whole family. Add images or music files to the library and transfer them to the iXL. The software also gives you access to other fun and free extras, such as printable activity sheets for your child or the whole family, craft and party ideas, and other activity suggestions categorized by age.

I found out about this toy because my nephew has one. He is five now, and he has had it since he was two. He still chooses to play with it the majority of the time over his tablet, leap pad, and vreader. My son just turned two, and he loves it! I really like how the toy has things that a young child can do unassisted, but it also has things that a five year old can be entertained with. My son loves the drawing program, the mp3 player, and the games we have loaded. The games are nice because they are loaded onto the game, rather than being cartridges, so I was able to load my nephew's games onto my son's player and visa versa. This thing is super durable! My son has dropped it down the stairs onto concrete numerous times and it's never been affected. It's easy to hold onto for younger kids, which I like. My son learned all of his letters and numbers with almost no effort on my part, and I definitely think it is because of this game.
I highly recommend purchasing rechargeable batteries for it. My son likes to use it as a music player and leave it turned on and playing music. I have two sets of rechargeable batteries and I just have one set charging while the other set is in use.
My only complaint about this game is that the volume button is huge and right in the middle of the controls, so my son often turns it up all the way, which drives me crazy. But there are worse things!

We have Dora, Handy Manny, Toy Story, and Cars. Each of the programs offers different games, a story, and coloring book pages and stamps.

The iXL
------------
My mom bought my son the Fisher Price iXL for his 3rd birthday in Sept 2010. I like many reviewers was kind of worried he wouldn't get it or understand it, but boy was I happily surprised. He took to it as another reviewer said, "like a duck to water". He loves to trace his letters and I was surprised he knew just what to do without any assistance. He is also a Huge music lover and we have downloaded approx 30 songs (we added an 8GB SD card) for him that he likes to draw to. (You can play music in the drawing/coloring feature.) He plays with this toy everyday and we let him use it at bed time so he can listen to his music. I recommend these headphones to go with - [...] - they are really great quality, they stay on, and they seem durable.

My son has only the Toy Story 3 game and the monkey game that comes with it and it seems to be enough for him. They keep his attention and he hasn't asked for anything more which is good because the games seem to be quite pricey. I like that the games download onto the system and I don't have to tote game cartridges around where they could possibly be ruined or lost.

The iXL's durability can't be beat. My son is a typical 3 year old boy, tantrums and all and he has been known to throw it when he gets mad. (We always take it from him for a day or so when he does.) So far it seems to hold up great with some light scratches on the outside, but it opens and closes great and the screen is in perfect condition 4 months later. The plastic seems to tougher that some of his other toys.

The Leapster2
-----------------
I bought my son the Leapster2 for Christmas because he liked the iXL so well and I thought it would add to the fun. The Leapster2 games are cheaper and I was able to pick up a couple before Christmas for around 8.00 a piece compared to around 20.00 a piece for the iXL games. Game prices were a HUGE selling point for me. We ended up getting him Creature Create and Handy Manny. Out of the 2 the Handy Manny has held his attention longer than the Creature Create, but that's not saying much because he has only used the Leapster2 maybe 10 minutes since he opened it on Christmas Eve, 3 days ago.

He seemed really excited about it when opening it up and couldn't wait for me to get everything set up so he could use it. Set up seemed to take forever by the way. We chose the dragon game for the free game and he didn't really care for it, though I think it is prob the best of the bunch. We tried out the Creature Create game and he played with it for about 2 minutes before passing it back to me and telling me he didn't like it, to "Take it back to the store." I wasn't about to give up that easily so I opened the Manny game and while I like the concept of the game, it also holds no interest. I realize that it is prob because he is too young to fully understand what to do, but I have set him down to try and teach him and he just isn't having it.

The plus side to owning the Leapster2 system is that there are often sales on the games and you can find them pretty cheap on eBay. This prob has to do with the fact that the system is a bit older.

The graphics on the Leapster2 aren't as good as the iXL and the seizure warning every time you turn it on is kind of annoying. The plastic seems much cheaper as well and I don't expect it to hold up as well as the Fisher Price counter point.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall I would give the iXL *****
and the Leapster2 ***

This looks like a very fun toy. I haven't actually given it to my three-year-old yet because I'm saving it for a big plane trip, but I've fully tested it out and it is functional and durable, despite some negative reviews. I generally think this is a really good toy. I'm going to start having to limit screen time with this one because I'll bet my daughter will want to play with it too much. I have a few minor grumbles only. I wish it had a small keyboard. Everything with a keyboard on the market has stupid content. This has great content but no keyboard and my daughter wants something with a keyboard because she wants a "computer". This doesn't look like a phone or i-pod, so there is no sense in pretending it is one. It would be better as a mini-child's laptop. Also, I wish it would speak the child's name the way the Leapster does. That one has much more limited content but it is very attractive to children thanks to its keyboard and voicing of the child's personalized name. A combo of those features in this would make for the super-ultimate preschool toy. Otherwise, it has great features. The mini-apps, which are downplayed in advertising, are among the best features actually. Don't be misled. Little kids can't do and don't care about the "games". The like the drawing studio and music. They also love the piano mini app and the virtual pet and things like that. The free story that it comes with is about baseball and is really pretty stupid but I have yet to see a manufacturer who could get it threw their heads that they could use actually high quality children's stories with this. Say, hire a real author. Duh. But I digress. My kids don't even know what baseball is because we don't live in the US most of the time but I don't particularly care because I wanted it for the mp3 player, art studio, letter writing and photo book features and it has those and much more that will be great for my kids.
