Back in the 1980s, before CDs had replaced records, I happen to come across a recording of Andre Previn performing George Gerswhin's Rhapsody in Blue and the Piano Concerto in F. I already knew that Previn had distinguished himself as a conductor, but I had no idea that he was also a gifted pianist.

In the process of moving, I lost that record album, but was delighted to discover that Previn's performance had been transferred to the CD format. The jazz influences in the Rhapsody and the Concerto in F are well known. I have always appreciated those pianists who could bring out the subtle interplay between the jazz and "classical" elements of these works. Previn does a great job. I recommend this recording.

I am an aspiring pianist myself. When I listen to this CD, I am motivated to practice harder.

Another reviewer commented that this CD sounds like a rehearsal. I can understand that comment. But I don't see that as a negative. It has a spontaneous quality and real personality. It's not too polished. That's why I bought it after hearing it played on one of the local classical music FM stations. I like that it's not too perfect & polished. I think it's a beautiful, fresh rendition of music I've heard many times; with a recording like this, I'll never get tired of it.

Good grief, this was hard to find. I've been looking for years. It's fabulous. This is the very best rendition of Rhapsody in Blue I've ever heard and I've been listening to the song by many performers for about 50 years. I have this on vinyl for 30 years and have longed for a CD of it..

Andre Previn conducted this Symphony as they made beautiful music. It was a delight to watch one of my favorites, Gene Kelly, dance to this 'American in Paris,' in a movie long ago. Previn also recorded this and Rhapsody in Blue in which he played the piano while conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in an older recording (his hairstyle is the '70s), which also included the same Gershwin Concerto in F in which he played piano as he did on this recording.

His 'Like Young' got him on the radio, but this kind of music was by far his best achievement. He was a grand conductor, but I never could see what he saw in Mia Farrow (after Frank Sinatra and before Woody Allen). I'm glad he went to Pittsburgh, one of my favorites places , to lose someone.

This album has three of the greatest American classical music works. My favorite is the Concerto in F. Worth a lot.

I bought this for my husband and he plays it constantly. He is very happy with it and therefore so am I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive delicacy and lack of over-playing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2021
What I like about these performances of the concerto and rhapsody is that the piano is not balanced excessively forward, rather sounding in among the orchestra and not dominating. Previn’s performance is agile, idiomatic and attractively small-scale, in the sense that, where appropriate, there is great delicacy and gentleness. Another reviewer used the word Mozartian, and that is apt. In other words, if you are looking for a more flamboyant performance in the grand manner, you should look elsewhere. These Previn performances are musical and deeply satisfying. The “American in Paris” is glorious and the Pittsburgh orchestra is on fine form throughout. I do, though, find the orchestral percussion a bit overwhelming in the grandest, loudest passages of the concerto.

5.0 out of 5 stars A écouter sans modération

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant performances!

Among Previn's numerous recordings of Gershwin's works for piano and orchestra, this Philips version with Pittsburgh SO is very impressive. First of all the recording quality is far better than other recordings, capturing Previn's dazzling playing and the orchestra's vivid colours with natural clarity. Previn plays the both works brilliantly with amazing dexterity and delicacy. I would give 5 stars if there's a bit more wildness and rhythmic energy in the performances. An American in Paris is superbly played throughout.
