The translation quality is very low. They didn't proofread their own work. The interface is dull. The Windows version is much better. I appreciated the illustration though.

THis game will have you running errands f-o-r-e-v-e-r. And ever. This game has way to much talking in it as well. I know. I know. RPG's are supposed to have talking. But come on. This one will torcher even the biggest fan of cliched characters. Worst of all, the battles stink. Sorry to break it to you. Skip this one and move on to greener pastures.

I really would of liked to give this game a better review, i had high hopes in parts of this game that it would turn out to be somthing more... but no, just more of the same. Dont get me wrong, Im a huge RPG fan, new and old, still on meds for my FF withdrawl while i wait till the new one comes out. The story starts out great, hero searches for his long lost sister that was kidnapped many years before, joins an adventure guild to set out on his broad search, meets friends, and thats where it gets stale, you join a guild (ARC THE LAD), but you dont go on any quests for it...the world is small, and the misssions are repetitive at best. You spend the whole game traceing and retracing the same paths over and over and over...it gets very boring. The pet system is non- exsistent, dont even know what the point of it was, and the game plays out way too easy. If your looking to waste some time or your on a boring road trip, then this will pass the time.. but thats about it. buy it if its cheap but dont expect too much from it.

Think about this game like so many of the 16 bit RPGs, especially Lufia and others that were just off on the edge of mainstream RPGs. If you really compare it to games like those, then you might be able to give this a fair shake. Though it isn't really a standout among the slew of great RPGs produced nowadays (this is a re-release after all), it does appeal to someone like me who is addicted to old school RPG and can look beyond the bad translation (hello Final Fantasy Tactics on the PS1 - terrible translation in parts).

I agree with many reviewers and believe that the Japanese text was run through an auto translate and then 'spruced up' a bit. Many of the lines don't make much sense. This is more noticeable early in the game. One particular reason I believe this to be the case is when the kids keep calling the tutors (or priests, or whatever they are) professor. The Japanese word for teacher, leader, instructor, or any person that is educating you is sensei. If you watch as much Japanese anime and film as I do, you notice students in high school saying "hai sensei!". But the direct translation of sensei is professor, and this is the word that an auto translate would choose. But 'teacher' or some such would have been what a proper translator would have selected. Also, the fact that there are no translator credits at the end is a dead giveaway.

But the translation actually gets a little better, and it's often hokey and amusing. Not as bad as "all your base are belong to us", but it still has that feel at times, and it made me laugh more than it caused frustration. The other negative that people point out is the pet system. Yes it's inexplicable. But I often found humor in selecting 'praise' only to see the word 'happy' in the dialogue box! But those little critters are often pretty grumpy, and they do seem to take the challenge down a bit when you receive items or they use buffs, so I just ignored them.

The game is easy early on. You actually play about 20 minutes before your first battle, and the early battles are super easy. Bosses aren't too tough since you can quickly build up special attacks. But if you want the challenge, then I suggest you try and beat the game without using these 'deathblows'.

Graphically the game is impressive for a 2-d top down RPG. The folks who developed this game also made the Ys series, so they know 2-d graphics. It's not as impressive to watch as... say Crisis Core... but again, we're talking re-release of a Japanese only title made for the TurboGraphx 16.

So if you want to explore an old school RPG that is actually pretty fun (not terrible like Beyond the Beyond... remember that one? 'shudder') then give this a try. It reminds me of Lufia and some of the Enix RPGs for SNES. It's not anything new, and it shows it's age, but it is still worth a play through if you liked those old school, turn based RPGs.
