Mansion of Hidden Souls is a hidden gem on the Sega CD. The story line involves searching a mansion for you sister who is slowly turning into a butterfly; other humans who have been turned into butterflies appear throughout the game to give clues or pester. Truly bizarre premise for a game; perhaps if more games like this had been produced back in the early 90's the Sega CD might have survived longer.

Pro's- While poor looking by today's standard's, the game utilizes the sega cd's harware to full effect and creates a convincing environment for gamers. The music is genuinely creepy but at the same time has a lyrical, hypnotic quality. The storyline is interesting and unusual and manages to engage the gamer.

Con's- The game is fairly short and as many of these games go, has less replay value because once you've solved it, why go back? The music while good (as noted above) can become repetitive and the acting of the voices vary in quality. Some gamers may wish the puzzles were harder to solve and the the game does run on rails (meaning you can't go anywhere in the mansion you want or move about 360 degrees).

Verdict- despite some of the flaws, most gamers will probably appreciate playing the game at least once, if just for its ingenuity and bizarre premise.

This is an old game for sure, but if you ever get a chance to play it, you won't be disappointed.

The same starts out where a brother and sister are roaming in a field when they spot a butterfly. This reminds them of a tale where if you look at a butterfly too long in this field, you become one. The game unfolds where the sister runs from the brother and he goes after her only to find a mysterious mansion that appears out of nowhere. It is up to him to find his sister and solve the mystery of the mansion and its butterfly inhabitants.

Mansion of Hidden Souls is a game where if you let your imagination take over, you will be very entertained. The story is easy to follow and while some of the puzzles are easy, some will keep you busy for a good while. The graphics and sounds are very dated for today's standards but it really adds to the sense of wonder.

There are only two versions of this game available, for Sega CD and Saturn. I've only played the Sega CD version. You will need to find one of those systems or a legal emulator to enjoy the game. It is worth the search and investment.

Mansion of Hidden souls is one of those lost Gems that deserve to be rediscovered.
