Product Description

If there's one game that deserves equal time as the highly anticipated Madden NFL 2001 for the PlayStation2, it's Sega's NFL 2K1. Game developer Visual Concepts tweaked the artificial intelligence and improved the gameplay of the inaugural edition while preserving the incredibly detailed graphics of the series.

We recently put a preview copy of the game through its paces and immediately saw some major improvements over NFL 2K. Many of the bugs that hampered the earlier installment, such as the second-player difficulty in calling a time out, have been fixed. Also, we found no lag problems in a half dozen tests of the game's Internet mode. Sega is claiming that gamers who play NFL 2K1 on SegaNet (its online gaming service) will have no latency problem.

NFL 2K1's running attack has been tweaked, and a juke option has been added. Beyond that, backs have been given real-world balance as they make their way through the line of scrimmage. For instance, they shift their weight and put their shoulders down to gain yardage and deliver a blow instead of waiting to be tackled. The quarterback animations have been redone, too, providing smoother movements when they tuck the ball in and fake a run or unleash a bomb to a streaking receiver.

Gamers will find the same easy-to-navigate play-calling menus with some new plays on offense and defense. A new franchise mode allows you to play general manager and draft, trade, and release players to free up money under the salary cap.

In terms of who will win the Lombardi Trophy for sports game of the year, it looks like Sega's NFL 2K1 will be a good bet in the office pool. --Todd Mowatt

I own Both PS/2 and Dreamcast(I bought both of them this year) and so naturally own NFL2K1 and Madden2001 for PS/2. I personally feel that NFL2K1 is a better game than Madden2001. Since others have already spoken about the graphics and Network features, I would limit my review to GamePlay. In my opinion there is no other game out there that can compete with this one on Gameplay alone. The rookie mode is very easy and good for new comers. But, once you get to know the basic controls, you will want to crank up the difficulty level to Pro. The going could be very tough at the beggining( I can't remember the countless number of times I wanted to throw my controller away with frustation) but you have to be smart in selecting the plays and practice a lot before you can begin to win. Trust me when say eventually you would be able to defeat the AI engine majority of times. There is a certain amount of unpredictability with the game that make one come back to play it time and again. This has tremendous replay value. Add to this the internet option that allows you to play online and I can only wonder if one year is Good enough to be able to play this game before NFL2K2 happens.
PS: As I said I have Madden 2001 and I like that game to but as far as real SIM is concerned NFL2K1 is the way to go.

My boys (8 & 16) already had NBA2K1 and the controls for NFL2K1 are similar so the learning curve was minimal. They were able to start playing straight away. Graphics are good and the sounds (taunts) are entertaining.
The kids like it, so that is the mark of success!

NFL 2K1 is a fun game if you're just looking for a good football simulation game with no basis in reality. The menus are quite intuitive, the learning curve is quick, and the player movement is pretty good. That being said, I cannot believe that the NFL gave the approval for use of their player names and trademarks on this totally unauthentic effort. Some of the really obvious problems: EVERY kicker in the game is right-footed, including Oakland's star rookie, Sebastian Janikowski. There is NO player-specific commentary by the announcers (who ARE these guys, anyway); every comment sounds something like, "Doug Flutie (insert pregnant pause for disc scanning) really threaded the needle on that pass". The Madden games for PS1 may not have commentary directly relating to the play on the field, but it felt a lot more authentic because Pat and John were referencing specific traits of individual players. If you're like me, you'll turn off the commentary after about three series. The PA announcer isn't much better, either yipping ecstactically when the home team runs for "No Gain!" or howling that "the pass is incomplete!" on a two yard RUN. The roster and line-up shuffling is also extremely limited. Tailbacks and fullbacks are lumped together as generic "running back" (not that it matters, because I challenge anyone to actually find a play where the FB carries the ball...), and there is absolutely no way that I've found to change who your kick or punt returner is. The injury simulation is also lame; first a window pops up at the beginning of a play when someone is going to get injured (BEFORE they actually get hurt), then a few plays later, some crazy message like "Randle out for four plays with torn groin muscle". EXCUSE ME??? A torn groin muscle only keeps someone out for FOUR PLAYS??? Much has been said of the revamped running games, too. Well, here's the scoop: it's impossible to gain more than five yards by running inside, and it's impossible to gain less than fifty by running outside, and those rules apply whether you're running Marshall Faulk or Sam Gash. The sound effects are also weak: since when does the sound of colliding masses of 300 pounds flesh, bone and shoulder padss sound like popcorn in the microwave? It's obvious that ... nary a football fan was consulted. I'll stay with my Madden 2000 for Playstation for yet another year.

one of the best football games ever. Better than 2k2 if the draft picks bug was fixed
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2000
This game has consumed more of my days (and nights) than any other game I have ever played. Its gorgeous graphics and realistic presentation are by far the best in the genre. But, alas, I am back on the PS 1, playing madden. Why? The gameplay is sadly lacking from one unalterable design flaw: The easiest setting, rookie, is ridiculously simple. The next level, pro, is orders of magnitude more difficult, at least for me. And there is no way to tweak the AI to individual strengths and weaknesses. I have found that if one falls behind, it is nearly impossible to catch up. A 2 minute offense is just not possible due to the all knowing and tight covering defense. On top of that, when a receiver is actually open, they drop passes at what seems to be an unacceptible frequency. Moreover, defense is very porous against the CPU. Playing a stellar team like the Rams you have a chance in the game against some opponents. Playing a team like the Saints (at least as they are rated) ensures a losing and frustrating season.
The franchise mode is a nice try although the game is "light" compared to exhibition or season mode with fewer graphics, stats or tracking of other games. It also seems like the AI plays differently although this is difficult to gauge.
My recommendation is to buy the game to show off your new dreamcast. For serious gaming, though, you will have to look elsewhere.
