Throughout the 1980s, a damning generalization held true: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly and cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the Brit effort, since they effectively emphasized a driving, no-nonsense approach to the music. Among metal aficionados, this album ranks as one of the defining moments of the entire genre. Of the nine songs here--including Maiden classics like "Run to the Hills" and the title track--only "Gangland" falls flat, though it's immediately overshadowed by "Hallowed Be Thy Name," acknowledged by many as this band's apotheosis. --Andrew McGuire

The Number of the BEAST as a whole represented a high-water mark for heavy metal, striking a balance between accessible melodicism and challenging technique and intensity
Aggressive tempos, twin-guitar interplay, wide-ranging power vocals -- and cranked everything up faster and louder. The album's intensity never lets up, the musical technique is peerless for its time, and there isn't a truly unmemorable song in the bunch

Steve Harris writing gets more ambitious, largely abandoning the street violence of old in favor of fittingly epic themes drawn from history, science fiction, and horror. All-time signature songs are here:

- "Run to the Hills" dramatized the conquest of the Native Americans , it features Maiden's trademark galloping rhythm, which in this case serves to underscore the images of warriors on horseback

The Number of the beast is the maiden hallmark , classic intro, Dickinson's vocals which ascend to amazing levels , and fit in perfectly with the mood and the structure of the guitars /drums
.
"Hallowed Be Thy Name" is perhaps the most celebrated of the band's extended epics; it's the tale of a prisoner about to be hanged, featuring some of Harris' most philosophical lyrics. It opens with a superbly doomy atmosphere before giving way to a succession of memorable instrumental lines and an impassioned performance by Dickinson; despite all the tempo changes, the transitions never feel jarrin

CD remasters integrate "Total Eclipse," first released as the B-side of "Run to the Hills

I came to Maiden late. Which ain't that bad. Because today's music is total garbage. And discovering the legacy of this beast has been awesome.

This album opens with Invaders which has a cool riff that almost becomes its' own chorus. The Prisoner is phenomenal and recalls many classic metal themes that reinforce the need to be resilient and strong in the face of obstacles.

The 'hits' are packed together in Run to the Hills and The Number of The Beast.

What differentiates this band from so many is that there are no real throwaway songs. Unlike other bangs who craft hits for radio airplay, this band exercises the ultimate care to bring each song to fullness. Unlike, say, Metallica, who swing wildly between anthemic and mythological solos, there is a line that runs straight through the Maiden landscape like a highway through the desert. And everything they do stays right there. They don't dun off into self-indulgent side roads. The just smack you in the face and put the hammer down.

High energy ROCK.

Maiden had already recorded two superb albums before "Beast", but this was the one that help put them on the map with most metalheads. Bruce Dickinson steps in for the troubled Paul Dianno, and he just steals the show with his soaring, but non-screechy vocals. Dickinson pretty much leaves his stamp on every track on the album, and its all class. That to me is the impressive thing listening to this album almost 30 years after it was made; the gigantic amount of restraint and musical professionalism Maiden displays in the contents of the album. Classy Classic Metal, if you will. The songwriting here is uber-strong, cuts like "Number of the Beast", "Children of the Damned," and the live favorite "Hallowed be thy Name." Smith and Murray tear it up on guitar, with Steve Harris doing his usual impressive bass noodling. This would be the last album for Clive Burr, leaving the drum slot vacant after it's release. Losing a singer can be devastating to a band-especially one that was on the cusp of good things before the Dianno debacle; but Bruce and the rest of Maiden shined through with this. Good songs: Children of the Damned, Run to the Hills, Gangland, Hallowed be thy Name.

For those of us that hadn't caught on with Iron Maiden and Killers (I was 10 and 11 respectively), Number of the Beast was one hell of a fast, aggressive, complicated Hello! I don't recall it being love at first listen, but something I spent a couple months approaching via friends already into Priest and Moorhead. Songs shared on small walkmen and our parents big record players before they got home. It was a little scary because the subject matter was dark, the lyrics vivid, the guitar /bass/drum interplay way the hell up in that rarefied Yes and Rush stratosphere.
Bruce's shouted "Six six six" would overshadow the publics perception of the music and the band itself. Unfortunate, because the power of Steve's literary level lyricism, the complicated musicianship, and Bruce's insane range, place the record outside the genre confines all these years later. This is a masterpiece.

The album that first comes to mind to almost anyone who knows of Iron Maiden, and there's a reason for it. It features the band's classic lineup and holds some of it's best tunes. Bruce Dickinson is one of metal's best vocalists and the guitar, bass and drums are superior and show pure talent from every member of the band.

I'm sure if you're a fan of metal you've heard this album many a times, so you're in the comments wondering if this mix is a good one, you're answer is yes, definitely. It sounds as if it was produced in the 21st century and is a great mix, I can hear everything, even on s***ty old MacBook speakers. It is best experienced with some high quality speakers (of course as with everything else), my favorite brand being Bose. Pick up this mix of the album, you'll be happy with the sound quality.
