While this machine is being phased out for the updated model, the PSP version 1 or 1000, or whatever it is being called, is an excellent device for multimedia. I have had mine for just about 4 months, and am very pleased with the way it can store music, photos, mpeg4 video, and even with a handy program I found on the net, I can take my dvd's that I have recorded and put scenes from them on my PSP.
The latest firmware 3.71 allows videos to play sequentially without breaks between clips, which is a great feature. For a little handheld the sound is fine on the PSP even without the earbuds if you just want a little background music nearby. It truly is a wonderful device. The video picture quality is amazingly sharp.
With many mp3 and video players, you hear of terrible horror stories, machines breaking after a couple months, or just not working right from the start. So far my PSP does everything that I want it to do, it has been a very reliable machine. The only time I had a problem was when I was saving a game, and I was falling asleep with it on my chest, and i sort of dropped it, Just a couple inches but it turned off and I lost the game save that I had been playing for a week.
The PSP syncs to my win XP PC with no trouble at all. I have learned that you are not supposed to erase files that are in your PSP with your PC or the PSP may have a problem, so I have not done that. Copying files from the PC to the PSP is a snap. Just delete files through the PSP itself.
Of course, the PSP does something no other machine can do which is play PSP games, and there are some great ones out now, and more on the way.
One of these days I am looking forward to possibly downloading PS1 games to it, we'll see what happens there. As far as homebrew goes, I personally am just not interested. I do have a bunch of "official" demos on it that I downloaded from the web from reputable websites. Lately there has not been a whole lot of new demos, if a game is good I think the publishers should release a demo.
I have never dropped the PSP on the floor. You should make sure you don't do that. Maybe it would break, maybe not, let's not find out. If you are travelling, keep the PSP in a case when not in use.
I am very pleased with my purchase of the PSP.
I purchased this brand new item because it is able to do one thing my PSP 2000 will not--format PhotoFast CR-5400 MS Pro Duo-->MicroSDHC Dual Slot Adapter cards PhotoFast CR-5400 MicroSD to MS Pro Duo Adapter Dual Slot . I did a firmware upgrade on my PSP 2000 a while back and Sony slipped a mickey in the software--it will still read these adapters, but will no longer format them. Dirty pool--Sony wants you to buy its overpriced Memory Stick Duo Pro memory cards! (Since writing this, I may have had a bad adapter card. I bought a new one and had no issues on my PSP 2000. Everything else applies to the PSP 1000. I still think its a gem)
Nevertheless, if you find a good clean PSP 1000/1001, they are still very worthy devices. The screens are still terrific, and to be honest, they are made so much better than newer PSP models. Newer PSP's are very plasticy, inside and out (I guess I expect better from Sony), but the 1000's are almost all solid metal. I particularly appreciate the positive catch for the UMD drive. Sony put so much quality into the 1000's. It's a pity current generation PSP's aren't made so well.
I would beware of any PSP that has been modded. While the modifications might work fine, you could wind up with a real headache--BEWARE!
If you are a hard-core gamer, purchase the latest, greatest PSP (PSP 3000). I am told that some of the newer games may not run so good on the PSP 1000. Newer games may also require the advanced firmware, the increased system memory, and the faster processors the new ones have. The screens are slightly better on new ones too--but then, shouldn't they be?
If you are a more casual PSP user like I am, and you use your PSP more for movies and playing your favorite MP3's, with an occasional jaunt on the internet using the built in Wi-Fi? You'll be very happy with the PSP 1000. It should provide you with years of reliable service--and it just feels good in your hands. As I say, it truly is sad Sony didn't put the same build quality into current generation PSP's. Perhaps next time.
One box was packaged very well, with airbags and the psp itself protected nicely in bubble wrap. The other box, however the psp being wrapped, had absolutely none of those airbags whatsoever. But both of them charged and powered on just fine.
It turns out they were both from Japan, the XMB using 'O' button as primary rather than the cross. They were produced in 2009 with a firmware of 6.1. One of them is in mint condition, even came with a screen protector applied. The other has very minor cosmetic scrapes with a couple scuffs on its glass, but runs and plays just as well. Interestingly, the buttons and D-pad in particular are much improved from the 2005 US version of the PSP 1000, which I own. On-par with the 2000 or 3000 that was being released at the time of production, really I can do diagonals with no issue.
A couple of beautiful units that I'm pleased to have acquired. Will buy again, A++.

I will warn about PSP batteries though. My personal experience is be careful. If you smell something odd while playing. Check your battery! I smelled an odd smell and it was coming from the battery. It blew up on me. (the stuff leaked out inside and the battery stopped working) So from a personal experience, just be careful for that.
