Never reached it's potential...
I purchased my original front-loading Sega CD system the day it was released back in 1992. I had high hopes for this expensive ($300) Genesis add-on. The original Sega CD system was packed with a total of 7 games: A 5-in-1 Genesis compilation CD, the CD edition of Renovation's Sol-Feace, and a full-motion video Sherlock Holmes mystery game. Being packed with so many games seemed to justify the high price tag, especially considering that game cartridges routinely sold for around $60.00 at this time.More than doubling the processing power of the Genesis, the onboard processor of the Sega CD ran at 12.5 MHz. It included hardware for scaling and rotation and a very nice 16-bit sound processor. Combined with the Genesis, this was a very formidable system for its day. There were three categories of games available on the Sega CD: Full-motion video (FMV), enhanced genesis titles, and original (non-FMV) titles. The original titles were my favorites. These were games designed from the ground up to utilize the added processing power and storage the Sega CD offered. The result was higher resolutions, smoother animations and more detailed graphics (be sure to check out the images I uploaded!). Sonic CD is a great example of an original Sega CD title. The enhanced Genesis titles were basically Genesis games with enhanced sound, thanks to the redbook CD audio and 16-bit sound processor. Some of these titles included animated cinemas as well. Otherwise, you were still playing a Genesis game. As an owner of a Sega CD system, I felt that when a certain game was released on BOTH cartridge and CD, I had to buy the CD version. The problem is that most Genesis games were not ported over to CD. So I found myself holding off for months for a CD version that would never come out. This must've had an impact on cartridge sales. As for the full-motion video titles, this has become the stigma of the Sega CD system; there were way too many of these crappy games. Basically, these are nothing more than cheesy, pixilated movies with bad acting. The game player is given cues every so often, to control the direction of the video; you're not actually controlling the action. The only FMV games I liked on the Sega CD were the animated ones like Dragon's Lair, Road Avenger and Time Gal. These were a different breed than the Night Traps, Corpse Killers, etc.For those pondering the purchase of a used Sega CD unit, by all means pick one up. There are certainly enough quality (non-FMV) titles available to justify the cost of a used unit. Several of these titles are among the greatest 16-bit games ever created; if you are a collector, you must own these. Here are the titles that should be considered: Sonic CD, Flink, Mickey Mania, Wonderdog, Chuck Rock 2, Ecco 1 & 2, The Terminator, Robo Aleste, Final Fight CD, Formula One World Championship, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Snatcher, Batman Returns, Eternal Champions, AH3 Thunderstrike, Earthworm Jim SE, Silpheed and Shining Force CD.Have fun!

at 1st, i expected this Underrated Add-on to be as what it was when hyped as a under powered leech to the genesis.

Those critics could not be more wrong. Installing it is as easy as hooking up a controller to any console, the superb music, and appropriate for its time FMV games, cut scenes, and frivolous animation definitely makes it superior to the Super NES. since it is quite easy to find, It is a must for a Sega Enthusiast. Sure there are gimmicky games that make it clearly inferior, but such titles should be avoided.

Waste of time and money not to rag on the system or library of games itself but my experience of purchasing one on amazon don't lol got a combo with the genesis the genesis works fine and the systems were really clean but the discs wont spin or read in the sega cd which def means it wasn't tested before shipping even tho it said it was not to mention the broken controller along with the wrong rf cable and generic ac adapters which these are known to get bad caps from the wrong adapters I know it's hard to rag on anything 25 years old but leads me to really becareful wen purchasing any used stuff on amazon I get ripped off every time after spending way more than what a broken system is worth

I would have to say that this is not in very good condition. I would consider very good condition to be in FULL WORKING CONDITION. As a result, I probably would have rated lower but I was overly excited to receive the system. When it arrived, the sega genesis 1st gen worked, but like all old cartridge systems, it required being blown on to work. When I tried to use the sega CD, it did not turn on. I had to clean the contact point between the sega genesis and the sega CD to get it to work and even now it is still a bit touchy." I have also recently come to notice that the sega cd has problems saving games. if i leave the system off for roughly half a day it will show up as if the systems memory is full. I can format it, but this is a recurring problem, so i am not able to save games properly, unless i play them every few hours. And another note, the 6-button controller that came with the system is not fully working, the up button on the d-pad is stuck.

In 2011, the Sega CD is tough to suggest to anyone that didn't grow up with, and appreciates, the 16-bit era. What makes it tough is that the Sega CD isn't like the Genesis or the SNES (2 five star systems, IMO), it's an add-on to the Sega Genesis that really lacked games that have that timeless factor to them. In all honesty, my love for this system has more to do with nostalgia rather than because it has a ton of games that I still enjoy playing. There are about 4 or 5 RPGs that are really solid, and still fun to play today if you enjoy 16-bit RPGs (people that got into the genre years later might not get into these games). The Terminator, Sonic CD, Earthworm Jim, and space shooters like Robo Aleste, Lords of Thunder, Sol Feace, and Android Assault are all really solid games that are still fun to play, but after that there really is slim pickings, and those games really don't cover many genres. For people that love FMV, and point and click games, the Sega CD just might be heaven on earth, but I'm sure that's a very small and select crowd.

In truth, I could probably suggest about 20 to 40 decent, fun, playable games to people that absolutely love anything on 16-bit tech, but I would be hard pressed to suggest more than 5 to 8 really good games that stand the test of time to someone that is curious almost 20 years later- Pointing out great games on the Genesis or SNES (or even older systems)really is an easier job.

If you must own a Sega CD (and don't already own the Genesis), I would suggest picking up a CDX or an X'Eye for the simple fact that they are Genesis/Sega CD combo systems that use only one AC adapter. Then you'd be able to pick from the awesome Genesis library and whatever games pique your interest from the Sega cD library. It's more expensive that picking up a Genesis and then A Sega CD (in most cases), but it'll take up less space, and give you less headaches.

This system has had ALOT of negative reviews from people like the Angry Video Game Nerd. Don't get me wrong, I love watching his videos (I'm a big fan) But you must understand, his business is to verbally destroy things in his reviews, thats his schtick (like my horrible spelling!!) Its for entertainment purposes because he is an entertainer. It was a great review, and I still watch it to this day, but I want to set a few things straight. This was a fantasic system for its time. If you are looking for something that plays like a playstation...Don't buy this, buy a playstation. Sega CD is one of the first cd consoles (behind the Turbo Grafix 16 CD) and to be honest, it does look like it at times. However, this beast had alot of great titles like silpheed, Sol-Feace, Terminator and android assult just to name a few. If you consider that this system was really competing with the super nintendo and the tg16 cd, thats quite impressive. As far as this system only having FMV games as some have stated...no it dosen't, it had alot of really great gems that weren't FMV (Full motion Video) This is a great system that unfortunately didn't stand the test of time but still has great games, even for this day in age! especially for retro gamers like me...Now the 32x on the other hand......lol ...thats a different story in my opinion ( I agree with the 'Nerd totally on that one)

This is a very Underrated system! I love mine and I play it frequently since I got it. There are many games that are not well known but are excellent titles to own for this system. It has alot of charm for its time and is definitely worth picking up for classic videogame collectors. Make sure to use the correct power supply because it is easy to short the fuse inside if you use the wrong power adapter.
