Battle System
Space Marine features a fluid combat system that allows players to seamlessly switch from ranged to melee weapons without interrupting the flow of combat. Hitting the melee button at any time will result in a close range strike with the equipped hand-to-hand weapon as well as the camera pulling out to melee distance. Pulling either trigger will instantly snap the view back to behind the player’s shoulder ready for precise shooting. These systems are immediately responsive and leave the player in full control at all times. As the player dispatches enemies in Space Marine they will be earning "Fury" which can be used to unleash devastating ranged or melee attacks. The player can use "Fury Marksman" to enter a heightened form of awareness where time seems to slow down allowing them to pick off multiple ranged enemies in the blink of an eye. Alternately the player can opt to utilize their "Fury Strike" up close and personal with a sweeping area of affect attack that will obliterate anything close enough and knock-back and stun more distant foes.

Gameplay: 4.5/5
I have never played a better hack 'n' slash (and shoot) game, and I doubt a better one even exists. Controlling your space marine is sublime. He feels heavy and beefy, yet quick and nimble at the same time. Slicing your way through the green horde is a blast, and I havent gotten tired of it even after putting in 75 hours of play (which includes multiplayer). You get a nice assortment of weapons, both melee and of the shooty variety, and they all feel useful. When you kill enough Orkz, you unlock Fury Mode, where you glow gold and become an unstoppable beast for a short time.
I wouldn't call it Perfect, however. Combat is basically comprised of two buttons: attack, and stun. To a first-timer, it may feel quite simplistic, and I do kind of wish they had at least one more button for some type of slash variety. Maybe one for a quick jab, one for a hard swing, and the last for stunning. Combat doesn't get repetitive by the end of the campaign because there are enough other options, with the evade / roll button, and the quick grenade button. And You will appreciate the simplicity when youre literally 100% swamped by Orkz and you aren't fiddling with trying to figure out some fancy combo string, but it could have used just a little more finesse.
Additionally, it might be just a little too easy. Your Space Marine is an absolute monster, and can take out huge hoards on his own, especially when you abuse the more exotic weaponry and lay it on thick with the fury mode. It may be my 40K Lore fanboyism talking, but it shouldnt be that easy to kill all of the scariest enemies in the game.
But then again, I'm delving too deep into the negatives. The combat controls may be a little simple, and the enemies may be a little too easy, but the bottom line is that it's still FUN and EXCITING. Relic did a good job with the core gameplay, and you will definitely have FUN playing the game.
Graphics: 4.5/5
I've always loved Relic's graphics, and this is no exception. Everything looks great, and will totally satisfy anyone looking for a bloody good time. The animations are amazing as always, the color palette is nice and colorful, the particles look just as good and better than Dawn of War 2's, and you'll definitely feel like youre part of the world.
Sound is impeccable. The guns all sound great, the melee weapons sound great, and the enemy's dying screams will become tatoo'd in your brain. The soundtrack is kind of generic, but very fitting nonetheless.
I only give it 4.5/5, because I think the presentation could have been more effective. What I mean is that you get VERY few instances of lighting ever changing, and when it does, your eyes will pop and you will say "why dont they do that more often??". Also, there are some very impressive set pieces... out in the distance and away from your eyeline. If you look around, you will be very impressed, but they should have WOW'd us with that stuff, instead of just letting it be.
Story: 2/5
Relic kind of has a spotty history with story and characterization. The plot is serviceable, and at least somewhat memorable, but could have been better. The characters are zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz BO-RING. In Dawn of War 1, they were very bombastic, but a little cartoony. In Dawn of War 2, Relic tried harder to make them more serious, but ended up making them just uninteresting (at least in single player). Here it got even worse, and your main character, Captain Titus, is a wasted opportunity. Relic could have made little nerds like me all giddy with grandiose proclamations of fire and fury, but instead he puts me to sleep. I definitely wouldn't say it's offensively bad, and I know they tried to make a good story and a relateable main character, but captain titus wont make anybody you about killing all enemies of the Emperor, and Imperium.
Multiplayer: 4.5/5
I have two words: FUN FACTOR! okay, i have more words, but the multiplayer is just plain fun. And at the end of the day, what more can you want? You get two main modes, team deathmatch and capture ground, and three classes to play in each. Playing as the Assault Marine (jump pack and melee), Devestator (slow moving but has very powerful guns), and Tactical Marine (a combination of quickness and shootyness), are all fun, and you will keep coming back over and over to explore all the gun and perk combinations.
Speaking of guns and perks, I really resent the whole "Call of Duty" system of gaining experience and unlocking items such as new perks and such. When you first start out, you really feel gimped with your lack of options. The system works because youre always motivated to complete weapon and condition challenges to unlock new gun options and armor customization, but Relic can feel free to ditch it and come up with something new for the sequel.
Oh, and the obligatory "horde mode" is incredible. Exterminatus is a blast, and you will have a heck of a time.
Overall: 4.5/5 (rounded to 5).
The single player campaign is a rockin fun time, but the small shortcomings prevent it from becoming an instant classic. The multiplayer is totally fun to play and will keep you hooked for quite a while, even though it has a nasty case of the CoD's disease. The graphics and the sound will totally satisfy any 40k nerd, and newcomers to the series.
It falls short of greatness, but it's an admirable effort from Relic Entertainment, and I'm glad it's out there. If Relic finds that perfectly inspired sweet spot with the gameplay, keeps up the always excellent graphic and sound design, but works a little harder at their historical weak points such as at creating a truly rousing story, giving us brutal Space Marine characters that every skinny nerd will want to control, and improves their level layout design, then the next one might just be that PERFECT 40k game that will blow everyone's balls off. But for now, we have the impressive first attempt with Space Marine, and we can all be happy that Relic is in charge of the license.
It's hard to feel like an epic Space Marine when your "brothers" are confused and in the way at best.
Where this game really falls short is the Online Multiplayer. A lot of multiplayer shooters have implemented the level-up for better gear system. Space Marine, however, leaves a massive gap between have and have-not regarding weapon stats. When it comes to fighting opponents in power armor, sticks and stones will, in fact, not break your bones. I felt, starting out, that sticks and stones would have been an upgrade.
The combat in multiplayer is nowhere near the fluidity achieved in single player.
Worst of all, you can pay for DLC that gives you a clear advantage in multiplayer. Could I pay $2 for a particular advantage, but I won't. It's the principle of the issue.
Overall, this was a disappointing title that felt well behind the technology curve of even semi-modern day gaming.
The first thing you'll notice about Space Marine is that it looks beautiful. The graphics are simply astounding. You'll need a decent graphics card to handle them, but it doesn't have to be a top-of-the-line card. I'm running a GeForce 240, which is at or below the low end of the required video card, and I turned the graphics down just to be safe, but the game seems to run just fine without any slowdown. Though I probably wouldn't try running it with anything less. Not sure if it's because of this, but I have the EVGA GeForce GT 240 512 MB DDR5 model, which is faster memory than the GT 240 DDR3 model available so maybe try the demo.
The story is a bit tired, Ork attack, Space Marines sent into secure the area in front of rescue fleet. You battle a bunch of Orks until you meet the "surprise" twist enemies in the last 3rd of the game. The combat between melee and ranged attacks is practically seamless. I liked combat. It'd be fair to say it can get repetitive, but I had great fun all the way through doing it. Everything looks simply beautiful.
You get to use a chain sword, a combat axe, and the super powerful maul. When using the maul you're limited to the weaker of your projectile weapons as compensation, though really I spent most of the time fighting melee and using my bolter so it really didn't matter except in a few fights from a distance. They also let you use a jump pack on several occasions, which was great fun and allows you some more variety in your attacks.
Now for the problems and there are several. First, the game is short, really short. Start to finish took me a little under 9 hours. There are only 17 true levels and an unplayable 18th epilogue level. I finished it in a couple of days. There's not that much to go back to play again, though I enjoyed it quite a bit and probably will. You can get a good chunk of fun from playing online, if you can get connected to a game, which helps a bit, but you have to pay for extra DLC to play the cool stuff like playing as a Dreadnaught.
The game is a Steam Works game, so you have to have Steam installed. You also can never sell/trade the game since the code is forever tied to your Steam account. Steam terms are also that a game is "rented" for the one time rental fee. Even if you buy the game retail here it's the same thing (you're only buying the code to link it to a Steam account). You don't own the game. They can close your account for most any reason, though in practice they only really do for billing disputes. A tip, do not pay with PayPal or a debit card; if there's an issue and billing gets disputed they can and will lock ALL games on your account. I've never had a problem with Steam though some people hate it. So you've been warned. Also, the DVDs that come with it just install part of the game. You'll still have to download about 2.5 GB from Steam to complete the install. If you're on a bandwidth limit, keep that in mind. Your install will likely take at least a couple of hours even though you have DVDs. Lame.
The last problem, it is VERY glitchy. I was having crashes AT LEAST once a level, however the game has frequent saves and generally it wasn't at the same place, so I didn't mind that much. Eventually, it got annoying so I looked up and if you have BitDefender AntiVirus it may interfere. I cleared out my temp folder, verified my Steam cache, and set an exception in BitDefender AVC to the program file (easy to do, a quick web search can get you instructions). After that, maybe one more crash. However, I still got all kinds of little glitches, like not being able to pick up audio logs, enemies hitting me from too far away, attacks sometimes not working, and really annoying times when I just sort of ran in slow motion despite using dash.
Overall, if you're really into Warhammer 40k, then now that it's dropped in price it's a now brainer. This isn't the end all experience, it's not perfect, and again it's pretty short with not much new replay, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will replay.
