‘World’s most valuable’ Subaru up for sale
Ultra-rare widebody Subaru WRX 22B STI in near-new condition could be yours for $800KOne of the coolest and rarest Subaru models ever built is officially up for grabs at carsales via a Sydney-based dealership, which describes it as the world’s best and most valuable Subie.
But with only five examples delivered to Australia back in 1999 – and just 424 units built in total – this 1998 Subaru Impreza WRX 22B STI manual coupe won’t come cheap.
In fact, the company responsible for its sale, Road + Track, has put an $800,000 price on what’s been described as The Unicorn.
The Subaru 22B STI was built to honour the Japanese car-maker’s 40th anniversary, as well as its third consecutive manufacturer’s title in the FIA World Rally Championship.
Delivering a whopping 206kW of power and 363Nm of torque from its turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder boxer engine (EJ22G), the 22B was claimed to hit 100km/h in just 4.7 seconds – supercar-slaying pace in its day.
Wrapped in WRC-inspired body panels, the rally-ready 22B was fitted with a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission, adjustable centre locking differential, trick all-wheel drive system and Bilstein suspension.
According to its seller, of the five 22Bs delivered by Subaru Australia, “one is still in Subaru Australia’s museum, another car went to 555 Racing to become a WRC competitor and three went to private collectors”.
With just 3514km on the odometer, the dealer says this example has been kept “in what can only be described as still in the box condition” and was maintained its entire life by a Subaru dealership.
The seller says it also comes with an amazing history and is “possibly one of the best documented collectable cars we have seen”.
The 22B in question has had just one owner and appears to be in pristine condition, including its unique front bumper and wide-body fenders, its beautiful glossy paint and its big red brake callipers at each corner.
“A must see for any serious Japanese / Subaru car collector, this 22B is available for viewing by appointment in our showroom,” says Road + Track, which welcomes trade-ins, can arrange transport and is also offering finance for approved purchasers.
