(24 October 2012) The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, will visit the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, on Friday 26 October, as part of his official visit to Chile.
At 10.45 a.m., the Ecuadorian leader will deliver a lecture entitled "Challenges of Latin America". He will be welcomed by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of this United Nations regional commission.
As part of his main activities in Chile, President Correa will also take part in the opening of the 32nd Santiago International Book Fair, where he will launch his book Ecuador: de la Banana Republic a la No República (Ecuador: From Banana Republic to Non Republic).
The lecture by President Correa at ECLAC will be attended by local authorities, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Chile, officials from international agencies, academics and representatives of civil society organizations.
Rafael Correa has been Constitutional President of the Republic of Ecuador since January 2007. He is an economist from the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil, Ecuador, as well as having a doctorate in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana, United States.
Before taking office as President of Ecuador, he was the country's Minister of Economy and Finance, and an independent consultant. He was also Senior Lecturer of the Economics Department of San Francisco de Quito University and Administrative and Financial Director of education projects financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
