Generous and free, Alda Merini subverted the practices of her time by forcefully claiming her poetic urgency towards a society that wanted her as a wife and mother and that was it. In love with life and love, she met her audience with the courage to show herself naked and whole, giving a great lesson as a lady to the same society that had misunderstood and marginalized her, relegating her to a decade of mental hospital confinement.
