LEXINGTON - One day after the Netflix show chronicling his senior year and 2018 ACL injury was released, Kentucky freshman quarterback Nik Scalzo suffered the same injury again.

Scalzo, who is one of three quarterbacks featured in season three of the Netflix show "QB1: Under the Lights," reinjured his knee in a preseason scrimmage Saturday. Quarterbacks are held from contact in practice, but Scalzo's knee gave out when he planted to make a cut on a run.

"Disappointed for him," Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops said Tuesday after confirming Scalzo will need another surgery. "He’s worked extremely hard to come back as fast as he did from the first surgery, to be cleared, to get out here and participate. He was doing a heck of a job."

Scalzo was one of two quarterbacks Kentucky signed in its 2019 class and he opened camp splitting fourth-team reps with fellow freshman Amani Gilmore.

Scazlo was unlikely to play this season even if healthy thanks to the presence of starter Terry Wilson, Troy graduate transfer Sawyer Smith and UK sophomore Walker Wood ahead of him on the depth chart, but instead of spending the fall helping Kentucky's scout team he will spend it rehabbing.

"I really feel for him because that’s a hard surgery to recover from," Stoops said. "He did it once, and he’ll have to do it again but I’m certain he’ll be back at full strength.
