Lizzy Musi Crashes, Gets Engaged All In The Same Day

Second-generation doorslammer drag racing standout Lizzy Musi enjoyed and endured the highs and lows of racing and life within a single day as the “Street Outlaws No Prep Kings” series stormed through South Carolina’s Darlington Dragway last weekend. Musi, in just her third race behind the wheel of her all-new Robert Hayes Race Cars-built 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, known as “Bonnie,” got loose in a contest with California Brandon James and violently struck the guardrail, battering her own body and that of her prized racecar, sending her to the hospital for a routine evaluation.

“Thank you to our family, friends, fans and sponsors for your support and concern after Lizzy was involved in a top end crash today during the first round of ‘Street Outlaws No Prep Kings’ at Darlington Dragway,” Musi’s team said in a social media statement. “Robert Hayes Motorsports builds an amazing racecar that did its job and kept Lizzy safe. ‘Bonnie’ is already on its way to Robert’s shop to assess the damage and figure out our gameplan. We’re a strong team and we will be back.”

Musi returned to the Darlington ‘strip, sore but uninjured, to support teammate and longtime boyfriend, Kye Kelley in his racing efforts. Unbeknownst to Musi, however, Kelley had planned out a starting-line wedding proposal that more than boosted the spirits of his wife-to-be.

“Yesterday was a mixed of emotions kind of day,” Musi said. “First, thank you to everyone that checked on me to make sure I was okay and all the fans that supported me through it all. I’m pretty sore today with a pretty good knot on my neck and sore from the belts. The car did its job. Robert Hayes builds not just a badass racecar, but a really safe one.

“My feelings are torn from this, I and the team idolized this car so much. A lot of heart and soul went into it. We kept finding new power with the setup…on that particular run the car left hard, went left, shook the tires and I lifted. When I didn’t see Brandon I pedaled it and the car was like a bat from hell…super aggressive. When you’re racing you push to get to that finish line first. I wasn’t expecting the outcome of the car picking the wheels back up again when I pedaled and I just could not control it. [It] happens way too fast. People watching from the outside will never realize that unless they are strapped in themselves. When you’re pushing limits to go fast things are bound to happen and sometimes they are unfortunate. [We] need some time to regroup and come up with a game plan.

“Toward the end of the night [Kye] surprised me with ‘the question.’ I didn’t know how to feel I was so excited and emotional all at the same time. My answer to him was ‘yes!’ I want to marry my best friend! He sure made up for the day I had.”

The “No Prep Kings” series will be back in action this weekend with the postponed Cordova (Illinois) International Raceway stop, where Musi will return to the wheel of the “Aftershock” Camaro she drove for a number of seasons and “Street Outlaws” spinoff series.
