Richard Osmond came home one night to find a small key sitting on his coffee table and the telephone ringing off the hook. He answered the phone and was greeted with some bad news -- his father's home had caught on fire and the old man was missing. Accompanied by a policeman, Richard returned to the house to investigate and find any clues he could of his father's disappearance or the fire. As he was sifting through the ashes and debris, he came across an old key for the grandfather clock. He inserted the key into the clock and opened up a secret passage. Startled, he entered the passage only to find a large red book telling of the Rockwell dynasty. The family, as well as 45 other people, had vanished one year ago aboard the luxury boat Orpheus. The story then tells of two talisman stones -- one blue and one red. It is fabled that a certain figure lusted for their power and with the stones, he could fulfil his wildest dreams and fantasies. Anyone with the stones has supreme power and is granted immortality and the ability to do whatever they'd like. Those with a heart will destroy them. As Richard, you are then thrown into the past and aboard the still missing ship. You soon find out that everyone you encounter is a lost soul -- a ghostly figure who never got the opportunity to make amends with loved ones or failed in the course of duty. In addition to finding your father, you vow to help the people who lost their lives aboard the ship by fulfilling their last wishes or regrets. If you do, they can finally rest in peace. Echo Night is a first-person adventure game from the makers of King's Field. As you journey around the ship, you come across items that are needed to unlock a specific part of the ship or solve puzzles. These puzzles usually include giving a certain item to a ghost, which then opens up a flashback scenario. In flashback scenarios, you will meet with that ghost when he or she was still alive. They help you to better understand that individual's predicament and situation. When you help them or give them the item in which they need, you find yourself back on Orpheus and their soul is laid to rest. Each ghost leaves behind an astral piece -- a glowing purple sphere. The spheres are then given to a strange, ominous man -- a collector of the pieces. The more crewmembers or passengers you save, the more the story begins to unfurl. You are given clues as to what you are supposed to do next and what really happened between the Rockwell family and the disappearance of the ship. There are over ten different locations aboard the ship as well as numerous past/flashback settings. You will have to help all 45 people aboard the ship, giving you roughly that amount of objectives and scenarios to complete. You will have to manage your inventory and keep track of what items you have, solve devilish riddles and puzzles and escape Orpheus alive...or wind up like the other ghosts.

Don't overlook this game.
This game popped up on my radar years ago, but it wasn't until recently that I played through it. That said, even though EchoNight is a PSone title with outdated graphics, the gameplay and story have definitely withstood the test of time. If I had played it back in its heydey, the graphics wouldn't even be an issue. EchoNight is a game that requires your complete attention. It's a 1st person, horror-mystery game where you use the D-pad and shoulder buttons (for strafing) to examine environments for clues and items. There are 26 ghosts in a haunted ship that you must help (not fight) by doing various tasks. Each ghost has its own story, and, for many of them, the gameplay goes from the ship to a flashback scene in the ghost's former life. The stories are interrelated and come together ... The stories are interrelated and come together at the end before your showdown with the end boss. There's no combat in EchoNight. You're given two kinds of health items: one for healing and one for breaking free of possession. Possession occurs when one of the three malignant ghosts in the story make it hard for you to move by drawing you close and then attacking you. It is not hard to escape these ghosts. They are sort of like mini-bosses, getting more difficult as you cover more of the map. To beat them you must give them a token of their past. There are some negatives I have to mention. First, obviously, is that this is a first-gen game. Sound isn't the best and graphics aren't HD (although the low quality graphics sort of lend a creepy aspect to the game). Second, you can't use the analog sticks. Crouching takes a little time since you have to hold the circle button instead of just pushing it. But you get used to that. The puzzles are challenging, which is good and bad. EchoNight had some of the hardest puzzles in any game I've ever played. Two times, I got stuck. I got past them with the help of a friend. You seriously have to search everywhere in the environments. Finally, and the biggest complaint I have, is that to save all the ghosts, you have to rely on the spin of a roulette table...literally. Fortunately, there are only 3 ghosts that require this and you don't have to save them to beat the game, but you will need to in order to see the alternate endings. EchoNight offers multiple endings (4 I believe) depending on how many ghosts you've saved. The map is useful, tracking what percent of the ship you've completed, although, from time to time, you'll find it very annoying that there's not a YOU ARE HERE icon to indicate your exact location. There's always enough health items and the game is generally straightforward, leading you where you need to be. Overall, this game is worth a buy since it has replay value. I believe you can get a good copy for under $20, well worth it. If you're a fan of mystery-puzzlers and horror games, if this one flew under your radar, I recommend picking it up.

Well, I will start by saying that I have a bias toward adventure games in general-they will always have a place in my heart....especially the horror genre! So I pretty much had to check this one out for myself. Not bad-fairly easy (which can be a good thing sometimes, especially w/ the low price on this PS1 game in 2006), kinda creepy, and not too much lost in translation (or even excessive crazy/dumb Japanese digestion/hybrid of Western ideas). What can I say-I'm compulsive/obsessive about the PS1!Well, I will start by saying that I have a bias toward adventure games in general-they will always have a place in my heart....especially the horror genre! So I pretty much had to check this one out for myself. Echo Night
One of the most challenging RPG's I have ever played. The puzzles are thought provoking and wonderful. Not normally a fan of 1st person games but this was delightful. If you like Clock Tower and games of that nature you will love Echo Night.
