Palazzolo Acreide is a Baroque town of Greek origins. Located in the Hyblean Plateau and not far from the Anapo River and the Rupestrian Necropolis of Pantalica, in 2002 it was awarded the title of World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, along with the “Val di Noto”. The town is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

In 664 B.C., on the hill known as Acremonte, which separates the Anapo and Tellaro valleys, the people of Syracuse founded Akrai. This location had already been chosen by the ancient Sicilian tribe of the “Siculi”, who erected their own village there around the 12th century, even before it was appreciated by the Syracusans.

Many were the colonizations that followed over the centuries: Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, and so on. Hence the various names given to the town: Akrai, Acre, Balansùl, Placeolum or Palatioli and finally Palazzolo to which, in 1862, the patronymic of Acreide was added.

Palazzolo Acreide and the surrounding countryside are a place of rare beauty, with a gastronomic tradition that probably has no equal in the entire province of Syracuse. A place that is still authentic, where mass tourism has not arrived and where one can be buy at a much lower price than in the nearby cities of Noto and Syracuse.
