Various hypotheses have been formulated about the origin of the name Militello Rosmarino.
According to a first hypothesis, the term Militello derives from meleto or apple field. A second hypothesis instead derives it from Miletum or Militellum, a Calabrian town that was the residence of the Grand Count Roger of Sicily. A third hypothesis suggests that the name derives from Militum tellus, i.e. urban agglomeration built by soldiers. A final hypothesis derives it from melis tellus, in relation to the large production of honey in this area.
The term Rosemary, added in 1862, derives from the name of the river flowing downstream.
