About the image: This is an image of an oil painting that I did. It is the fountain of La Contrada della Chiocciola in Siena, Italy. Chiocciola means snail in Italian. The isignia includes a snail that crawls. There are 17 Contrade (districts) of Siena that race in the famous Palio di Siena horse race.

I set out on foot to find this fountain with only my iphone and a basic tourist map of the city. I walked beyond the fountain of the Selva that I had drawn the previous day. Along a quiet road that seemed to be on the outskirts of the city walls. I walked some more through neighborhoods and past more fountains. Until I found what I was looking for. The fountain of the Chiocciola between two buildings and protected behind an iron gate.

This painting is adapted from a photo I took of the fountain. I am really pleased at how this turned out. For this painting I focused on the details. From the statue to the iron fence to the leaves and the bricks!
