Former Formula 1 team principal Flavio Briatore shared his appreciation for his old driver Fernando Alonso’s performance in Brazil yesterday.

The two-time F1 champion took to social media after returning to the podium at Interlagos.

It was a fascinating race in Sao Paulo with a very predictable winner.

Lando Norris tried to challenge Max Verstappen in the opening laps but ultimately couldn’t prevent the Dutchman from winning his 17th race of the season.

The young Brit also had a very comfortable race as he recorded another second-place finish, his sixth of the season.

He’ll be desperate to earn that first win but that’s going to be very difficult to achieve given Verstappen’s dominance.

His teammate Sergio Perez had a much more interesting race, trying to race through the pack from ninth on the grid.

He looked set to finish on the podium as he did in the Sprint Race until he came across Fernando Alonso.

The Aston Martin driver was absolutely exceptional in his defence and retook third place on the last lap of the race.

Flavio Briatore was among those who were very impressed with Alonso in Brazil.

He’s delighted for the driver that he brought into F1 by getting him a seat at Minardi and the rest is history.

Posting on Instagram after the race, Alonso said: “Keep calm and carry on. We don’t give up.”

Flavio Briatore applauded the 42-year-old, while Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois said: “Grandeeeee.”

His old teammate Marco Asensio simply said: “Bestia!!” adding to the praise for the Spanish driver.

The £78,000-a-week driver has struggled in recent weeks due to the poor performance of his car.

There were even suggestions after the Mexico City Grand Prix that he could potentially retire.

Briatore and the wider F1 world would hate to see Alonso leave the grid, especially after his performance in Brazil.

His contract runs until the end of 2024 but it wouldn’t be a surprise to further extend his time in the sport.
