12. Down to Earth (1940)
Who better to play a muse descended from the heavens than the Love Goddess herself? A sequel to “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” (1941), this comedy musical centers around the Muse Terpsichore (Hayworth), who asks to go to earth to fix a play that is portraying muses in an unflattering light. On earth, she assumes the name Kitty Pendleton and gets a part in the play. As she fights to change the play, the producer falls in love with her. The film received mediocre reviews, but Hayworth is at the height of her career, and this film belongs to her. Hayworth is always stunning in color, and her grace and agility make her the perfect pick to play a goddess. The film was remade in 1980 as “Xanadu,” which was her “Cover Girl” costar Gene Kelly’s last film.
