Rate this book
A delinquent’s gotta do what he’s gotta do…in the afterlife.

Yusuke Urameshi was a tough teen delinquent until one selfless act changed his life...by ending it. When he died saving a little kid from a speeding car, the afterlife didn't know what to do with him, so it gave him a second chance at life. Now, Yusuke is a ghost with a mission, performing good deeds at the behest of Botan, the ferrywoman of the River Styx, and Koenma, the pacifier-sucking judge of the dead.

They call themselves the Black Book Club: a consortium of billionaires who gained their wealth and power by dealing with evil demons. One of them has kidnapped a beautiful ice spirit named Yukina, tormenting her for the sake of her priceless crystal tears. Can the law-abiding entities of the Underworld tolerate this depravity? Of course not! That's why Yusuke, teenage delinquent and part-time Underworld Detective, has been dispatched to rescue Yukina and break up the Black Book Club.

Fighting alongside Yusuke is his friend and rival Kuwabara, who has fallen in love at first sight with Yukina. But if Kuwabara knew her family connections, he might not be so hot for the ice maiden. And Yukina's kidnapper isn't about to give her up without a fight. To destroy Yusuke and Kuwabara, he's hired nothing less than the Brokers of Darkness, demons so powerful that even the Underworld fears them. Yusuke and his friends are about to find themselves in the center of a demonic battle royale...

So we finally get to the Toguro brothers.

The first arc is actually a rescue mission. It's short, builds characters like Hiei and Kuwabara get to shine and grow in interesting ways. We also get to see Toguro's first level of badass pumped up roid raged powers. The second arc gets us into the dark tournament, with the first match underway with my boy Kuwabara.

You know tournaments are a stable in anime. Dragon Ball basically starting the trend but man oh man does Yu Yu Hakusho basically master it to give us one of the best arcs of all time. The first match is a lot of fun here and though it seems goofy at times the end result is kind of messed up and shocking. The first arc is a bit disjointed and feels rushed forward but we do get to see Toguro be a badass so there's that.

Not the best arc, but a good bridge into the dark tournament. A 3.5 out of 5.

Between the Yukina storyline and starting of the Dark Tournament, this is probably one of my favorites so far, but I gotta lower the rating for the mistreatment of/transphobia towards Miyuki.

Two arcs in one, and both are too nostalgic.

The first is the rescue of Yukina with similar sceneray (think Killua's family home), and the second is the beginning of a tournament, that seems to be crucial in this manga. And tournaments are a crucial part of almost all shounen manga and anime, so I'm excited to see how it unfolds.

It also comes with some awkward scenes (like that transphobic scene that really made me cringe)

The first foray into the Dark Tournament, and I have goosebumps! It is great seeing the bond between the characters grow and develop into a brotherhood that is just spectacular. Between the jokes, the action, and the story progression, this may be one of my favorite volumes of YYH.

So now we're in the dark tournament. Very much like the anime, with a few minor differences. But I like those small differences, it's like a little treat.

The art for the fighting scenes are masterfully done. Vivid, strong, and of course full of blood. What I like the most is that the fights scenes aren't drawn out, they aren't super fast, they're just a little shy of perfect. I have issue when things, (like fighting scenes) get drawn out so thine, so fruitless, that it gets boring. I'm talking about you DBZ. It's get to the point where I'm not even cheering for anyone anymore, I'm just shouting,

Will someone just die already!

Yu Yu Hakusho, in mange or anime, does this perfectly, probably why I like watching it over, and over.

I'm happy,

Happy Reading

Chapter 48 features a very transphobic moment that sticks out like a sore thumb. Unfortunate but I'm enjoying the rest of the story.

The escalation of danger heading toward the Dark Tournament is exciting. The battles leading up to it are pretty good, with one exception.

Chapter 47 and it's transphobia can fuck right off. That shit comes out of nowhere and represents the lowest point of this series in the 11 volumes I've read so far. Get that shit out of here.

The dark tournament is another adventure in this manga series where each character grows in some way and develops some new skills and issues some devastating results on the bad guys that want them dead. All in all a excellent manga series, a must read.

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!

Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.

Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.

The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

---

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.

Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.

While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.

Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

Okay folks, time for a rant regarding my least favorite character in the series, Yukina. Here we go.

One of things I appreciate about Togashi is, for the most part, he created a fun and fierce group of female characters. Even they can't always protect themselves to the bitter end, they still do what they can to get themselves out of a dire situation. And then there's Yukina, the literal definition of a damsel in distress.

Now, I want to make it clear that I don't hold any animosity to the damsel in distress trope simply because there are times when women and girls are held hostage and there's nothing they can do or that doing something could make their situation worse. My problem with Yukina is that she's CAPABLE of doing something but CHOOSES not to.

To illustrate my point, let's go back to volume 2 of the series. Keiko agrees to go with Dai, a thug, in order to protect her friends. When Dai tries to attack her, even though readers don't see what happened, it's implied that Dai had to knock her unconscious because she refused to back down. May I remind everyone that Keiko has NO POWERS and average human strength while Yukina HAS POWERS and could use them to her advantage if she tried. Back to Yukina's story, Yukina at NO POINT is shown or otherwise implied to have tried to escape, and when one of Tarukane's guards tries to help her, SHE HESITATES. Yes, it's obvious she was concerned about the guard's well-being, but the fact that she's not jumping at the opportunity to be rescued and never makes an attempt to leave on her own after being TORTURED FOR FIVE YEARS, it becomes increasingly clear that she's simply a damsel in distress and that's the extent of her character. I want to make it clear that I am not unsympathetic to what Yukina has gone through; no person should ever be put through what she has and it's awful. However, that doesn't change the fact that she just waits for someone else to rescue her and by extension puts others in danger.

That's all I really want to say. As happy as I am that the Dark Tournament arc has started, I had to drag through the Rescue Yukina arc and it left a sour taste in my mouth. Anyways, my favorite arc has started and I'm looking forward to seeing some of my favorite fights again.

I forgot to mention for Volume 3, but the first three chapters of that one are especially nostalgic to me because I had the VIZ Shonen Jump issue in which they were published. I bring it up because I also had the issues with the Yukina chapters here.

Anyway, we have a short arc where Yusuke and Kuwabara go to rescue Hiei's sister, where we meet the Toguro brothers who will become major antagonists soon enough, then we transition to the Ankoku Bujutsukai, arguably the peak of the series (I personally think I slightly prefer Chapter Black, though...).

Sakashita is like a proto-Satotz, in terms of facial features, which is somewhat interesting that Togashi would make a jokey character into a more significant one in his later manga.

Mildly interesting that such a worthless one-off character like Miyuki has gained fervent defenders from Western readers in recent years. I always thought it was funny how Yusuke has grown so powerful he can feel up her fake tits and real penis in the blink of an eye. I think I had a trading card of her, by the way, which is weird because otherwise I feel I mostly had Dark Tournament characters, and I think also Mukuro? Ah, well, I did have a card of Yusuke blocking Suzaku's lightning with his shoes, which was from last volume, and which always confused me because I would wrack my brains trying to think when in the Tournament did Yusuke do that, only to never really realize it was in the Suzaku fight much earlier....

Following my previous attempts to classify YYH characters into HxH Nen categories: Toguro brothers are probably both Enhancers and Rinku is a Manipulator.

This volume is the bridge into the vaunted Dark Tournament arc of Yu Yu Hakusho. The series had already quickly transitioned away from its spirit detective origin into a fight manga and this story solidifies that change. The only hint of the old style is the first part being a rescue mission but even then there's no actual mystery. The fights are still super quick and clearly illustrated, which is refreshing compared to so many other shōnen manga.

The beginning of the Dark Tournament felt a tiny bit like Enter the Dragon, but then again, any martial arts tournament story winds up feeling like that classic movie so I can't fault Yu Yu Hakusho for that.

There is an unfortunate scene of transphobia when Yusuke faces off against a character named Miyuki. It's an odd couple of pages and felt totally out of place. The scene reads even worse now in 2023, but it's main problem is just being a totally unnecessary bit that appears to serve no purpose to the story or characters.

We get a new look at some characters. Koenma Jr. shows up in human form. Yusuke's mom was almost unrecognizable to me outside of her usual environment. And there's this mystery "masked fighter" whom Yusuke brought along as the fifth member of the team.

A good "bridge" story that continues to entertain with its characters and artwork.

MUCH better than the previous volume. We're starting to see a variety of new abilities for our heroes and the people they are fighting, as well as each of them feeling dangerous.

I also like the entire arc with Yukina. It was very nice short and sweet, not trying to out stay its welcome. It helped show us new things for our characters, like a look into Hiei's motivations, Kuwabara's caringness and Yusuke's fear. The Toguro Brothers were interesting antagonists with interesting personalities and motivations, as opposed to the ones we'd seen before which were a bit more stock.

The Dark Tournament also started with a BANG. From the invitation, to the preliminaries and the first fight, everything has had moments of intrigue, drama, spectacle, awesomeness and fear/anxiety.

One critique I do have is that all of Kuwabara's fights have the same structure. They all start with him underestimating his opponent, getting punished for it and then using his smarts to get a narrow win. He often doesn't feel like he's strong, just creative. I'd like him to have some fights where he feels like he's on even footing for once.

Ladies and Gentleman we have ourselves an antagonist. Standing what looks like a 6’8 Guile if he had black hair and joined the Yakuzas. Volume 6 hails the start of a new era. Tournaments! Ha, Genkai heralded YuYu Hakusho with one of the greatest mentors in literature, now we’ve got Toguro, the Dark Tournament, Koto and more to come! You’re witnessing the seeding of one of the GOATs.

Going by the opening statement Togashi had health crises back in 1991. I know people are bleeding for more, new Hunter X Hunter but the man’s already dedicated his life to this art and we got more than we deserve. Props man, and thank you!

This is an awesome volume that has Yusuke fighting a powerful demon.

One thing that doesn't make sense though, is that when Yusuke went to the Underworld, he fought these supposedly four strong powerful demons along with his friends.

Yet this demon is even more powerful than the four strong demons in the underworld that wanted to invade the human realm. There's a bit of inconsistency in the power levels of demons.

But you can suspend that for your entertainment. Perhaps the demons in the underworld grew complacent and weak, and were surpassed by demons who live or work in the human world.

This volume introduces maybe the best manga villain of all time in Toguro (younger) and sets up the best tournament arc and maybe just flat out best manga arc in general in The Dark Tournament. Normally it'd be an easy five stars but there was an icky moment in one of the early chapters that really bummed me out, so it didn't feel right to give the full five. Still - some of the best manga moments of all time contained in this little book.

I think this is overall a good volume as Yusuke and friends try to rescue Yukina from the Black Book Club. However, I have to agree with other reviews, this volume does feature a transphobic bit that is played for laughs. This kind of writing is outdated, blatantly wrong, and needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, it does show our heroes in a bad light and may be triggering to some readers.

I knew that guy looked familiar! It’s the baddie from the tournament saga, which begins at the end of this volume! This arc is where I first started reading the manga back in the early US Shonen Jump days, and I’m excited to continue it. I dropped a star due to a poorly dated transphobia scene, which is never cool.

I was about halfway through this volume back in December and dropped off for a bit reading other things, but I'm back at it!

The start of the Dark Tournament! I only ever got to the end of the tourney watching the anime growing up, so I'm excited to see how it plays out in the manga, and to continue the journey after so many years.
