Rate this book
From Torey Hayden, the number one Sunday Times bestselling author of One Child comes The Invisible Girl, a deeply moving true account of a young teen with a troubling obsession and an extraordinary educational psychologist's sympathy and determination to help.

Eloise is a vibrant and charming young teen with a deeply caring nature, but she also struggles with a worrying delusion. She’s been moved from home to home, and her social workers have difficulty dealing with her habit of running away. After experiencing violence, neglect and sexual abuse from people she should have been able to trust, Eloise has developed complex behavioural needs. She struggles to separate fact from fiction, leading to confusion for the social workers trying to help her.

After Torey learns of Eloise's background she hopes that some gentle care and attention can help Eloise gain some sense of security in her life. Can Torey and the other social workers provide the loving attention that has so far been missing in Eloise's life, or will she run away from them too?

I’ve been a fan of Torey Hayden’s books since she began writing. Having studied and worked as a child psychologist, I’ve often cringed at her lack of boundaries and questionable judgment, but I still enjoy reading her.

Red flags should have been flying in Hayden’s face when Eloise showed up on her doorstep after a casual mention from a social worker, particularly after Hayden learned Eloise had a history of stalking a teen foster sister. This should have been a warning to use the strongest boundaries with the young teen, but Hayden decides to bring Eloise as an “assistant” to a job working with intellectually disabled five to seven years old despite Eloise saying she didn’t like children. Hayden’s idea was to have informal therapy during the car rides. Eloise seems like a below average, yet adequate assistant until she’s accused of biting a nonverbal child and pinching other kids at times when she was alone with them. After an informal investigation to see whether Eloise sexually abused the children, which she didn’t, Torey muses that the investigation was overblown. Hello????????????? Any hands on kids, whether “only” pinching or biting by a volunteer is wrong. It’s assault. The victim was nonverbal and severely delayed and she had admitted to pinching other kids but said the child big herself, despite not having a history of self harm. Hayden seems to have missed the entire point of her discretion.

Hayden is a wonderful storyteller. She explains complex psychological concepts in simple terms for readers who don’t understand the disorders without sounding textbook. She oozes empathy and often has good analytical skills. Eloise benefitted from her relationship with Hayden and THE INVISIBLE GIRL is a heartfelt story.

I've liked Torey Hayden's books since I was a kid. I'm delighted that she's writing again, after taking a break for a few decades.

Most of Torey's memoirs take place in special education classrooms in the US, but this one covers a timeline after she moved to Wales and was doing volunteer counseling. As Torey was working with a group of 6-8 year old special needs kids, teenager Eloise turned up and asked for her help. Eloise was familiar with her books and had tracked her down after another counselor had mentioned that Torey might be able to help her. Things had gone wrong with Eloise's foster family and Eloise wanted Torey's help to get back in their good graces. But Eloise's problems, of course, ran deeper than anticipated.

I found this story inspiring, although I missed the camaraderie of the classrooms in her previous books. It's worth reading if you're already a fan, but I would suggest starting with her earlier books if you're not already familiar with her work.

And I just have to say...'Elin', if by chance you ever happen to read this review: thank goodness for people like you. The world needs more of you.

Read it in one sitting

Always move me. Always make me cry. Hit home hard in my heart as I am “the child”. Relate too closely to so many of the feelings and stories especially this one. I had an inside mum who always there for me, loved me unconditionally and imparted her wisdom ever so lovingly to me. She appeared after watching the mum Olivia on The Waltons. Hence why Olivia being used in this story struck a deep chord, and the shame of sharing, the self hate, confusion, fearful of disclosure and transferring the feelings onto a real person who not always a willing participant. Thanks for writing stories that help some of us feel not so alone.

Not her best

Although it's a good story, I didn't feel the magic was captured quite as much as in Toreys other books.

I read my first Torey Hayden book when I was 15, and it is because of her that I became a Social Worker. I wanted to do what she did. Granted, she isn't a social worker, but close enough, and I basically do what she does. I'm in my 40s now and have always held her close to my heart, because there is just a special place there for the woman who introduced me to a career that has brought me so much challenge and fulfillment. Over the years I have met her and even have an autographed copy of One Child. It's one of the things I would save in a fire :) But, seriously, these books are truly Torey. They capture her and her heart so well. I found her to be as amazing in real life as she is on the pages of her books.

Reading her books always brings me to a place of instant comfort somehow, even though she talks about some very disturbing things. When you work in this field, you get used to disturbing things, sadly. But Torey just has this simple way of handling each story, each child, and each crisis with grace, patience, and humor, and it's just so soothing for me to read.

I have to laugh at the finger painting with pudding scene and the kids squealing how it looks like poop. Funniest thing ever because this is exactly what happens when you sit down with a group of kids and try to do something resembling counseling with them! Somehow Torey just has this amazing way of describing the chaotic joy of working with children! It's funny and impulsive and wild and is never boring. That just shines through in her books.

If you want a career in the helping professions, pick up any one of her books, and you won't be able to put it down. Guaranteed.

Thank you, Torey, for all you do. You've shaped my life in so many ways. I would read your grocery list if you wrote that up, so keep writing please :)

I first learned of Torey Hayden when her book SOMEBODY ELSE'S KIDS appeared in condensed form in the January 1981 issue of THE READER'S DIGEST; I stilll have a copy. I am a vocational rehabilitation counselor; so the work I do is quite different from hers. Still, the books she has written about her work resonate with me in a very powerful way. She does not shy away from writing about times when she isn't sure what to do next, about situations that confound her, about trying things that simply don't work. She captures the complexity and, ultimately, the power of the human spirit. She portrays all of the people with whom she works with incredible dignity and they are certainly fortunate to have her as their therapist and/or teacher.

I just finished this very powerful book and it is as good as I hoped it would be which, given my expectations for Hayden books, is high praise indeed. I realize that this review is quite generic; all I can say is that if you have any interest at all in counseling, therapy, or, more broadly, in the journey we all take as we try to live our lives, you owe it to yourself to read this and her other books.

My Review

I have read a fair few on Hayden's books, if you haven't they are not for the faint hearted. They are true stories about some of the children she has helped over the course of her career. We usually meet the child through her telling of how they came to her. This is the story of Eloise who shows up uninvited into Torey's life. Torey finds out Eloise has some deep issues and gets the green light to help/work with her.

These books are quite often traumatic, we find out the abuse and trauma of the kid or kids Torey is to help. Eloise story is pretty tragic and shows how abuse and neglect has such a lasting impact even after they get the child out or away from what happened.

The techniques and approaches I think are so interesting, Hayden is clearly a remarkable human being and how she interacts with and has encounters with them are something that stays with you long after you put the book down.

The kids often have some horrific behaviours because of what they sustained/endured, it is not easy reading but not overly graphic compared to some of the books. Poor Eloise, you feel heart sorry for these kids who are so failed by those suppose to love and protect them. 4/5 for me this time, I have read a few of Hayden's books and will read the others as we come across them.

14-vuotias Eloise siis katosi kesken juttelun Toreyn luona.

The Invisible Girl by Torey Hayden
This is the first book I have read by Torey Hayden. My niece suggested this author as she has read several of her other books. We are both foster parents. So, this book struck a chord in regards to childhood trauma and the behavior that often results.
I understand that this book is based on a true story. I am sorry for what Eloise went through in her life, but was glad to know she came out of it on the other end a good person. A lot of this book had a clinical feeling to it for me, but was necessary, I think, to ensure the reader had an understanding of the trials Eloise endured. Millions of kids are lost in the system each year. You hope you can connect to one and leave a lasting impression that somehow stays with them in their life.
Overall, I would recommend this book. However, I would caution that there could be triggers for some people.

This might be my favourite Hayden's book.
I think what makes this book my favourite is the fact I greatly relate to Eloise and this book made me feel understood. I am really thankful for that. Living with messy mental health is often exhausting and seeing a professional genuinely care for their patient was refreshing and it did help me sort some things out. :)
Hayden is a wonderful storyteller and sounds like genuinely caring being so it was no surprise to me that this book was great too. She also makes questionable choices at times that make me cringe, a lot. I can't blame the book for that because that's how it happened... But god did some parts confuse me...
Overall I am really glad I read this book even though some parts were tough to read.

Another non fiction look into have services can be applied and are helpful or not so in our world.
Torey is in Wales when she is sort out by Eloise. She wants her help but doesn’t know how or why.
Torey collects together what she knows and talks possibilities through with trusted friends/ health care professionals as to what may work when other things don’t. I really enjoy reading her work I find it inspirational.

I enjoy Torey Hayden's writing and was delighted to find a new one from her. It is a wonderful look at her work and she really helps us to see very fully the inner lives of the children she works with. I was especially grateful with this one to have an epilogue that let us know what happened to this child after she moved away from Ms Hayden's area. I found it fascinating to see how social services operate in another country. Doesn't seem like anyone has found a perfect solution.

Olen lukenut koko lapsuuteni Haydenin kirjoja.

I've been waiting years for this book

I'm stunned that Torey Hayden is writing again! I have loved every one of her books and finally, here's another beautiful book from her! I always learn so much from her about how to be an empathetic human being, though it's through her stories, not outright instruction, that I learn from her books.
If you haven't read her books, read them!

Lapsen tarina on mielenkiintoinen, kuten Haydenin kirjoissa yleensäkin.

Always reading pleasure from Torey Hayden

Her true stories are serious, but nevertheless joyful for the most part by the end of the book. It’s been wonderful following her for many years in her experiences with children. When I new book comes out, I snatch it up immediately, knowing it will be a rewarding read.

This seemed like a pretty realistic description of working with a traumatised teen, but I must say the Welsh child welfare system sounds pretty horrible, I got the sense this is set in the early 2000 so hopefully things have changed for the better since. The author is a great story teller especially considering the heavy topic. I'm definitely going to read more of her books after this one.

This was classic Torey Hayden. Her amazing way with troubled children, waiting with them and just being there in their silence and hurt, is inspiring. I highly recommend this and all of her books.
